Captain C. K Macdonald. Royal Warwickshire Regiment, has been selected fur service on the staff of the Mew Zealand defence forces, with the grade of second-class general staff officer. Captain Macdonald joined the Royal Warwicks in 11)02, when he was' specially promoted captain into them out of the Leinster Regiment, in which he had . served seven yen is. With the Loinsters, he went through the South Afrlcan war. 1000-2. and shared in numerous affairs in the Transvaal, Orange Fred State (Queen's medal with three clrfipg and King's medal with two clasps), and with the Royal Warwicks in the operalions against the Zal.ka Khel and the Mohmands (medal with clasp). - Tlie late Mr. E. C. Ashbv, of Pergh and Co., Ltd., and' one of tho best-known business men in Christ- ■ * church, was an enthusiastic swimmer and rowing man when younger, and waa one of the first members of the Christchurch Swimming Club. Bowling also < attracted him, and he was one of the original members of the Canterbury ' Bowling Club, of which he was preafdent in ISBR and 1100, and a life member. With Messrs W. Savage 1 , V. W. Parsons and B. Hale, he. won the rink championship of the South Island at ' Dunedin in 1800, but latterly he did net play bowls. He was for manv veara , an active member of the Canterbury Agricultural and' Pastoral Association, and for twenty-five vears was a member of the Ohristcburch Volunteer Fire Brigade, holding the rii nk of foreman for a considerable time. Mr. AshDv waa also one of the original members of the City Guards, f.n-t year he retired from the office of president of the Federal Club, after having held the honor for twelve years. He was not married.
