STRATFORD NEWS.

FROM OUE KESID ENT REPORTER. O'iiiv and Job Printing Works: York Chambers (upstairs). Telephone No. 113.

iiKii BRIGADE CARNIVAL A GREAT SUCCESS. BRILLIANT GATHERING. All outdoor functions are more or less a gamb.e on the weather, but the optimists of Siratiord felt fairly confident that if tile 1* ire Brigade Carnival was not well patronised it would not be the fault of the weather, nor would the lack of enthusiasm on the part of the nromoters be a fa»tur. Everything that could be done b) the officials to secure tho comfort and enjovmcnt of the guests was done, and, thanks to the favorable weather, all went well. A special feature of the amusements was the maypole dance, in the preparation of which Miss Papps and Mesdames Moon, and Sharp had taken infinite pains and trouble. Some idea of the extent of their exertions may be gathered from | tie fact that Mrs Moon made no less than 58 dresses for the children. Self- j denying enthusiasm of this nature i doubtless stimulated the public to do their share in helping by their presence at the carnival. l'he programme was lengthy and comprehensive so as to provide for all tastes, and as a consequence everyone present found much of interest. The brigade is fortunate in having so many good workers to assist in the laudable object in view, and much credit i 3 due to all the donors of prizes and trophies. The town band was in evidence early in the day, and led the procession to the Show Grounds, whither the public wended their way shortly after noon and the grounds presented a very animated appearance. The baby show produced 15 tntrie3, and was the source of much interest to the ladies. All the events ■ were got through without trouble, a flattering testimony to the efficiency of of the officials. A special word of praise is due to those who exhibited decorated vehicles, great taßte and ingenuitv bein<? evinced. The fancy dresses and posters, though not very numerous, were very effective.. t A very pleasing effect was produced by the procession of boy scouts, cadets, maypole and fancy wreath dancers, together with the prize-winners for decorated vehicles and ears, the young folks coming in for unstinted appiause. The attendance was estimated, to be over 2000, a result that must be very gratifying to tho brigade. The art union tickets found a ready sale, so that there should be a good return from that source. Among those present were His Worship the Mayor and most of the prominent citizens. The ladies sold most of the produce and other articles. The band was greatly appreciated, and enlivened the proceedings very much, it being also of great use in helping the children in their wreath evolutions, which evoked much applause. In the evening there was a torchlight procession of the brigade, headed by the band, and a large number turned out to *ee the novelty. The dance that was subsequently held was well attended and very enjoyable—a fitting finish to a successful day. We have to express our acknowledgments to the secretary and other officers for their courtesy and assistance, and lastly we heartily congratulate the brigade on the complete uccess of the carnival. I he prize-list will be pubished to-mor-row. BERNARD'S PICTURES. The new programme at the above pic-ture-theatre is especially attractive. The film of the "Life of Christ," which has ■been specially obtained, has proved a great favorite wherever screened. The star drama is "The Curse of the Golden Land," dealing with the life of a Russian peasant who migrates to Americ.i, leaving his wife and child behind, and the incidents of their heartbroken search for him form the chief scene in a very fine production that is bound to prove attractive. The strike scenes in WeM■gton are well chosen, and the supporting items constitute a programme th&t should ensure liberal patronage. The orchestra is a special feature, the latest operatic items being excellently rendered. TOWN HALL PICTURE^ The star film of an exceptionally good programme to be screened at the Town Hall to-night is "The Dream," a thrilling drama of 3000 ft. No one should miss this beautiful and powerful representation. The chief lauchter-raiser the Vitagraph Company's "Everybody's Dom* It," which is well calculated to I arouse the most morbid to a state of exhilaration. All the supporting items good and are of the usual varied nature while being well selected and pleasing. The music supplied is popular, and well played, materially helping the entertainment. STRATFORD GYMKHANA Ihe htratford A. and A. Association's annual gymkhana iB set down for Easter Monday, 13th April, on the Association's j beautiful grounds at Stratford. This function is rapidlv growing in favor with the public, and already entries are coming in. Held as it is, at Easter time, when there are no other counter attractions, the gymkhana offers to the sport-loving public a pleasant holiday The programme this year has been revised somewhat, a few more novelties have been introduced and events that were thought "slow" la3t vear have been cut out. The latest novelty is a dog trial, and the Association is offering a solid silver cup for comDetition amongst dog owners. Dogs will be present from all parts of the North Island and the public can be assured of witnessing some wonderful proofs of the collies' sagacity.
