A USEFUL OCCUPATION.

A girl with just an average education and no special training or opportunity lately struck out for herself in a now way, and is now earning a modest livelihood in a path which should be open to many (says a writer in the Melbourne Age). The inconvenience caused in the house of a friend when the nurse went on holidays gave her the idea. "There must he many mothers," she argued, "with children of various ages who at times badlv need a temporary second self," and she determiner to ofTer her services by the day, the half-day, or even the evening. In order not to waste time she had a series of letters neatly typed to this end, and these she distributed, so many at a time, in her own suburb. Of course, many remained unanswered, but she was agreeably heartened in her enterprise to get several applications for her services and in less than three months' time she hns worked up a paying connection. Her duties arc not heavy, and they frequently includa pleasurable outings. Besides instructing and amusing the little people, she takes them to matinees or round the shops. Days at the se&tide or in the country are also included in her week's programme, the short-handed, worried mother being generally thankful to see her children go off in the care of a~~ bright-faced, neat young girl who haa proved her ability to care for them in the best sense of the word.
