HOW WELLINGTON LAGS. A LESSOR FROM OUTSIDE. The civic self-csteom of Wellington I must ha ve suffered a mild shock when oni! of their journalistic mirrors held up to them a most unsatisfactory rellectiou npo» their lack of civio '>u»hfulness. "What Wellington wants is pushing along," suggested this writer, and to prove the point the'enthusiast describe how he visited the Tourist Bureau. "Have you any pamphlets describing the attractions of New Zealand towns?" asked the enthusiast. "Oh, yes," said the manager, "hero is Auckland, and Gishorne, and Now I'lvmouth, Napier and Chriatchurch." And he picked one off a number of littl" Btaeks of beautifully printed pamphlets. "Any about Wellington!" questioned the enthusiast. "No; somehow or other Wellington-has never gone in for that sort of thing. I am asked for them, too, often enough, but no one seems to be interested enough to do anything in the matter." "There you are. What did I tell you?" comments the enthusiast. "Not a thing about our own city in our own city! How much less would you hear about it out of the place? The Gi&bomc booklet is published by the Chamber of Commerce, the New Plymouth one by the New Plymouth Expansion and Tourist League, and the. Napier one by the Thirty Thousand Club. Is it not strange that Wellington has always sat quiet, and done nothing to push itself along?"
