TARIKI. (From Our Own Correspondents). j The members of our 'JVmiut Club tr.i veiled to Toko on the otli inst., and, after a very pleasant miting, the jila.\ being very even ami well eontested, re j turned defeated but noi disgraced, be- | ing only three games behind their up - | ponents. I t>ll the same afternoon a working' . bee was held to prepare for the llorti- , cultural Show on the liilh inst. Messrs . llawskworth, (Jus. Suhr, Grossman, .1. , (!lieeseiu:ni deserve a word o[ praise for , •'toed the mark," and lost no time in false, starts. After working steadily , for two hours, a halt was called, when ; ■the afternoon tea, kindly provided by the ladies, was much appreciated by Vne perspiring toilers. Messrs |Snhr and , Cheseman deserve a word of praise for the alacrity they displayed in handing round the "cup that cheers but not in- j ebriates." Like giants refreshed, the > bee-ites mice more seized their weapons, and with hammer and saw made such a , determined and irresistible onslaught on the hall that so far as the outside work was concerned there remains little to be done. On the following night the inside work was started, arid, assisted by Messrs J. Therkleson, Ackland anil I{. Jones, the above-mentioned again rendered a good account of themselves. , There is, however, still a good deal to be done in the interior, and each evening "handy men" will be welcomed to get things ''ship-shape," as judging from the way the entries are pouring in, the accommodation will be taxed to its utmost. An interesting addition to the many attractions of the show will be a side- , show of Mr. J. Therkleson's South African trophies and curios. Mr. Therkleson,' who spent many years in that colony and Rhodesia, has a very unique collection of horns, skins, and examples of native workmanship, besides a very line collection of rare coins. The harvest thanksgiving service was held on Sunday afternoon, when then; /■. was a very large congregation. The], church was beautifully decorated with I a profusion of (lowers, fruits and other j produce of the earth. The Uev. Mr. I Orillin officiated, and preached an im- j' prcssivo and interesting sermon. >, HUKWOItTJI . The, social in connection with the cross-road picnic was a pronounced success—the most successful, in fact, for many years, which goes to show that the road will prove a boon to the district, in a great many ways. The floor capacity of the school was taxed to its utmost, but a most enjoy- » able time was spent by the merrymakers, who appeared to rather enjoy the limited dancing space. Miss Brydon played a dainty piano solo, which was much appreciated, and Mr. Eva sang "Sylvie," which was loudly applauded. The music for the dance was supplied by. Mrs. Marsh, with extras by Mrs. Ritchie, Miss Brydon and Mr. Marsh. The supper (that all-import-ant part at such a gathering) was kindly looked after by Mesdames Baker, lirydon and Whittle, with some of the sterner sex poking around and generally ) getting in the way. However, we are necessary evils. The day's and evening's amusement was successful financially and otherwise, and we hope the elub will continue to flourish, and that next year we will see a bigger crowd from New Plymouth. It is pleasing to note the faith the settlers have in the district. Mr. Wilkie has built a blacksmith's shop at tlie junction of the Mangorei-Carring-toß cross road. Our main business thoroughfare is now about a mile long. Our school-teacher (M'iss (Jllmer) is leaving the district, and has sent in her resignation to the committee. PUNIIIO. A most enjoyable social took place in the school on Friday night, the proceeds of which will go' towards paying for the piano. The district between Okato and Pungarehu was well reprc•sented. During the evening songs were given by Mrs. F. 0. Street and .Messrs 11. Andrews, 1). l'ox, L. Carey and F. (bible. The music was supplied by Miss F. Corbctt, and extras were played bv Mr. Bottler, whilst the duties of MX', were in the hands of Mr. A. K. Sadler', j Mr. J. A. Thomas, our late school- I master, made a flying visit to the district on business bent at the week-end, and one and all were very pleased to see him here again, though sorry his stay was so short, i think it must bevery pleasing for a schoolmaster to meet with so many hearty handshakes on his return to a district! because as a rule the lot of a teacher is not alwavs happy. The Misses K. and D. llill have just' returned from a pleasant five weeks'' holiday spent with relatives in and around Wairoa, Napier and Hastings. Mr. G. Dewdney met with an accident when passing the. mail poach near the creamery on Friday. The horse he was driving took fright at something on the road and ran into the coach, with the result that the gig was smashed up, but luckily Mr, Dewdney and the horse escaped serious injury, I am glad to see that someone hn\ still got faith in the I'unilio road district. Mr. Xeilson, the founder of flRoyal Oak Cheese Factory at Omata, has jnst completed the building of his second cheese factory on the Punilio road. Now the settlers that used to have to curt their milk six or seven ".'ill's to the creamery on the Main road will only have a few hundred yards to go to the cheese factory, which wili mean a great saving, not only in time to the farmer, but in work for the horses, besides getting a higher price for their butter-fat.
