| AN ELECTRICAL SCARE PROTECTING BOROUGH'S INTERESTS. COMMENDABLE CAUTION. At the Borough Council meeting o Monday night, a letter was read iroi: the Minister of Public Works forward ing a copy of a petition received bv hin from tlie clerk of the Stratford Count; Council, containing 220 signatures, ii favor oi an extension by the iitratfori Electric Supply Company of the suppl; of electric, energy for light and powe to the Stratford County, and askinj the Minister to grant the company adi: quate powers and authority to enabl them to extend their lines, according t< a resolution of the County Council. The Lighting Committee reported re commending that a reply be sent to th Minister to the efl'ect that while tin Council has no wish to impede the issu< .of a license applicable to an area out side the borough, they are of opinio) that the Electrical SuDply Company ari aiming eh.eily at securing a license ove the borough. The Council therefore ad vises: (1) That the petition under no tice iloc» not state the purport of th. resolution referred to therein; (2) tha the majority of the petitioners are nrob ably unaware of tile purport of tha resolution; (3) that the petition w.i circulated for signature by a director o the Stratford Electrical supply Company The Council would be pleased to have i definite assurance from the Miniate that no license afl'ecting the Boroug; Council will be issued by the Govern meit. Cr. Thompson considered the ropor indulged in a personality that was t be deprecated, it bein" calculated to sti up strife between the Council and th company, and against this he protcstei Cr. Masters described the. proposed let tcr as a very silly production. Cr. King also protested against th personality introduced into the lettei which he considered showed bias. The Mayor pointed out frat all th committee wished to do was to poin out the true facts of the case, and prf tect the interests of the borough. Cr. Fredric pointed out that the com mittee did not, wish to harm the Electri Light Company, but that it was advii able to ■ safeguard the interests of th borough. Cr. Thompson moved an amendmer that the report be referred back to th committee for recommendation. The Mayor emphasised the fact thi what the Council wished to prevent wai the granting of another license to tl Supply Company over the borough. Cr. Richards maintained that tl crux of the matter lay in the iesolutic of the County Council, referred to in tl petition, that resolution not being s, forth in the petition, and not brou"l before the signatories thereto. Thi resolution, he said, favored a joii license over the borough and over tl county, and it was to combat this thi the fact was brought to the Minister attention. He justified reference to tl petition being circulated by a direct' of tin; Supply Company—a person wf would In; beneficially interested in tl grant of the license. He strongly o posed the amendment. Cr. King stated that there was i intention on the part of the petitioi to affect the borough at all. What thi wanted was electric power in the count Cr. Morison denied that the Couni was opposing the light being introduci into the county. On the contrary thi all wished the countv residents to hn this facility, bat it was quite right, put the position clearly before the Mi ister in the manner proposed by the coi mittee. Cr. Fredric pointed out that the Mi ister had already promised to give tl company power to extend ita operatio to the county, so that if that waa i the company wanted there was no oec 3ion for the petition.

ister had already promised to give the company power to extend ita operations to the county, bo that if that was »11 the company wanted there was no occasion for the petition. The amendment, on being put, was lost and the motion carried. BOROUGH COUNCIL The ordinary monthly meeting if the Council was held od Monday cvching. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. W. P. He was granted leave of absence from the meeting of the Borough Counj cil on Monday. 1 GENERAL NEWS The proceedings of a borough council are usually on the dull side, but Monday's meeting was relieved by more than one flash of excitement. A deputation of one caused the first flutter, when Mr. Diamond, in his quaint, pungent, and breezy way held forth on the "veritable gold mine" which the borough possessed in the Town Hall. He metaphorically j whipped himself for having missed the , opportunity of exploiting this El Dorado, and offered, in the event of the present lessee going out, to pay a rental of £7 , 10s per week for a one or two years' tenancy. Further, he was willing to pay a deposit of £IOO, or even £2OO, as evidence, of good faith. The councillors exhibited signs of gratification at the good fortrne of possessing such a Tain- j able asset, and the deputationist retired in a liappy frame of mind, based on a a contingency that may some day eventu- 0 ate. e From the appearance of the order paper on Monday night, it looked as if all the business of the Borough Council would be transacted in half-an-hour, but the fates decided otherwise, and it was nearer three and a-half hours before the adjournment took place. Much valuable time was wasted by reason of the position of several matters not bcintr (dearly ( understood, and, therefore, the councillors getting into a tangle, which took time to unravel. But ill the end all came out right. Your photograph will please them all —some of your friends have been expecting one for a long time—don't be satisfied with one taken years ago. just as you are to-day, in your everyday attire. Having your portrait taken is as pleasant as an informal call on good friends. Make an appointment to-day with Mr. MeAlister, Stratford.
