STRATFORD NEWS.

FiclSi CUII P.ESIDENT REPORTER. Office and Job Printing "Works: York Chambers (upstairs) Telephone No. 113.

OUKSELVE.S. Yesterday a change was made in thr> representation of tlie "News" in Stratford, .Mr. A. Wuller taking t-ne plane of .Mr. •). J. Staples, who lias been promoted to tlie sub-editorship of the paper. .Mr. Weller i.s an experienced and capable journalist, being a former member of the editorial 3ta(l' of the ".Vows," and for the paat live or six years aeting as managing editor for the Taiiiape Times. In making the change we feel sure the interests of Stratford and the important district it serves will continue lo be wel' looked after and advanced. We take <this opportunity of thanking tlie public of Stratford for the help they hav( always cheerfully extended to our representative, and to the solid business support they have accorded us since opening a branch in the town some uwo-and-a-quartcr i years ago, without wnich, of course, j a "Stratford page" would hardly be possible. We also desire to assui« them that no ell'ort on our part will iie spared to merit that support and assistance. We intend before long to make considerable improvement in the ser- j vice, and so make it of even greater value to this increasingly important centre. I FIRE BRIGADE CARNIVAL | The committee in charge of the above J carnival are evincing the utmost energy ■ and enthusiasm with the object of making the function a thorough success. The programme is one that should prove exceptionally attractive, and as the object is one of paramount importance, public patronage should be extended in that generous measure which is so characteristic of the people of Stratford. The retailers' Association yesterday decided to close at noon on Thursday, but with a view to ensuring an oppor- I tunity for everyone to be present at > the whole of tho.. sports, a canvasa was subsequently made of the townspeople for the purpose of arranging for the | closing of the shops at 10.30 a.m. The Borough Council has also been asked to grant its employees a full holiday on Thursday. The Brigade is undoubtedly one of > the assets of the town that should bo I worthily appreciated. No institution is | more worthy of support, and this op- j portunity of assisting towards provid- [ ing the brigade with proper equipment j is one that the citizens should eagerly i embrace, for the safety of their lives ! and property depends on the efficiency j of the fire fighters and their appliances, j In the still hours of the night, when the fire alarm sounds forth its summons, a thrill of excitement and sometimes fear, brings home to 'everyone aroused from their peaceful slumbers the terrors of the devouring element. It behoves all prudent and public-spirited citizens to see to it that when the need arises the means are available lo minimise the evil. No one knows whose turn it will be next to suffer from the effects of an outbreak of fire, so that all should join in supporting next Thursday's carnival, remembering the old motto that "Every little helps." - Conipeti-tors should note that all events have been made post entry. ENTERTAINMENTS j i BERNARD'S PICTURES. j The star attraction at the above pic- | ture entertainment last night was ''Those Who Live in Class Houses," and • it proved a worthy successor of the many 'excellent picture dramas that have been screened at this popular ; house. Throughout the 3000 feet of j film interest is kept at tension point, : and the spectators greatly enjoyed this . high life sensation, the scenes of which j are laid in New York. The supporting items were excellent, and included such ' popular favorites as the "Monogrammed j Cigarette," a vivid detective story, and i a number of comedies, sceirics, humor- 1 ous and other films, the chief of which I is the immensely amusing "Tiny Tim." j The programme will be repeated to- j night and to-morrow. j i TOWN HALL PICTURES. | Judging by the genuine appreciation I of the excellent programmes provided lately, the Town Hall Pictures are ' "making good." A complete change of j pictures will be screened to-night. The ' anti-combine supplies are drawn from j the world's greatest film people, and the j Stratford public receive them almost at ' first hand. i j PERSONAL | An old resident, in the person of Mr. ' Thos. Partridge, passed awav on Sun- ' day. ' I Stratford District High School is par- j ticularly fortunate in its teachers. Mr. , L. ISuehler, a junior member of the j teaching staff, has obtained a full uer- I tificate, with special mention. ! GENERAL NEWS On Sunday Mr. T. J. -lames piloted several members of the Mountain Club to Lake Dive, which was leached in a little over three hours from the Stratford Mountain House- - a very creditable performance. The trip, all hough entailing some rough travelling through bush and scrub, was very much enjoyed, and was pronounced to be well worth the trouble and exertion undergone. The. question of toll-gates is still monopolising attention among certain residents of Stratford County. ' The Swansea mad bridge is reported I to be in need of extensive repairs, I cost of which is estimated by the lior- ! ough engineer at There was a clean iheet at- the .Magistrate's Court on Monday morning. Noi many towns of the size and importance of Stratford can claim such a satisfactory record. < During February there were slaughtered at the municipal abattoirs (13 cows. 35 heifers, one ox, four ealves, 292 sheep, (iS lambs and 30 pigs, the slaughtering fees amounting to £SB 18s. The engineer of the Borough Council, Mr. T. D. Sullivnin, reports satisfactory progress of the kerbing ttnd rtuin-

• nelling work, and he expects to have the east side of Broadway, between Regan and Seyton streets, finished by Thursday next. It is pleasing to note that the noxious weeds in the reserve south of the river have been cut. Til doing this work tli'3 borough authorities are setting a very good example. ' ' The number of animals condemned at the abattoirs last month was not by any means large, considering the size of the district, tuberculosis being chiefly responsible. Only one pig came under the ban, and one sheep, the hitter being due to nephrities. Vi'iir "ii /ill please them all - el, h;i ve l„eu ex- J ]"■ !II 1 '>e ... . 1 .. :;r time :!
