CRICKET.

the senior competition. The North Tiiranaki Cricket Associations' senior competition was continued on Saturday in excellent weather. Wins were secured by Law and by United Service. UNITED SERVICE v. NEW PLYMOUTH. The match between New Plymouth and Service, on the Sports Ground was not remarkable for high scoriiiy. Service won by 51 runs on the first innings. Service won the. toss, and elected to bat first on a wicket which bumped .somewhat, Bain and Colvile opening to the bowling of Mason and Nicoll. Bain opened confidently, and scored more freely that he has done for some time. Colvile batted quietly, and had only .scored two runs when Stainton caught him nicely behind the wickets and Osborne took his place. Bain had now made -11 runs, and he and-Osborne carried the score on to 53 before Bain played over a good ball from Nicoll, and was dismissed for a brisk 47, which included three "sixes." McGie, the next man, played his first ball to Arden. who took the catch, and Sullivan took his place. Mason and Nicoll bowled well, and the fielding was good, so that Service stock tumbled in wjth a run. Osborne made ten, and no one else made double figures. The innings closed for 81 runs. This looked like a victory for New Plymouth, but their inninga was a fiasco. Marsh and Nicoll, who opened, looked like forming' a good partnership, but Nicoll was rim out for 17 runs. Sheppard followed. Marsh went out l.b.w. for five, and Arden joined Sheppard. The latter played a ball on, and Stainton was clean bowled by Bain and replaced by Mason. The procession closed for 30 rum Service took a second strike, opening with Brabant and Ingram. Good work by the New Plymouth bowlers and fieldsmen dismissed them for 84 runs, of which McGie made 14, the only dou-ble-figure score. New Plymouth made a bio* for the necessary 116 runs, but in the twentyfive minutes available made only 42 for four wickets. Following are the score*: — UNITED SERVICE. First Innings. In connection with the return match to be played in Christchurch by Sims' Australian team, the Canterbury Cricket Association and Canterbury Rugby Union, joint owners of Lancaster Park, have received on behalf of the team a very generous offer. The team proposes to give the whole of the proceeds of the match to the two bodies mentioned. This, it is estimated, is equivalent to a gift of £3OO or £4OO.
