(From Our Own Correspondents). KAUOTU. On account ul' tlic weather breaking, the Kiilmtu school picnic, which was ti> have been held on the Opunakc beach last Wednesday, took place Hie ft>lli>v.'ing day in Mr. W. Udilsoh'-s paddock. The morning was very wet, but it cleared up at noon, and out of the wind it was quite warm. Miss Stevens anil Miss Arthur, teaehers, were untiring in their ell'orls to please the children, Mr. Fielder assisting them until late in tinafternoon, when one or two of the committee came forward to help. Mr. .1. Schinklc saw to the copper being boiled, and the table was under the eai'e of Mcsdamcs llodson, Willc.ox and Williams. Knees of all descriptions wen' run by the children, and every child seemed to win something during the day. A ladies' race was run, Mrs. Williams being lirsi, with Mrs. Hayes a close second. At the close of the day the children gave three cheers for their teachers and the committee. Mr. and .Mrs. Layman, of Pungarehu, have gone for a trip to Sydney. Me.v dames L Fisher, A. Neilsou and A. Baker, jiinr.. have gone fur a holiday to Auckland and to the Exhibition. . Messrs Philips Bros, have sold out their butchery business. Messrs Baker, senr., and Parsons are the purchasers. It is to be hoped Messrs Phillips Urns, will not be leaving the district, as they are always to be found in the front in getting up anything to help the district. The Cow-testing Association shows that the ten best cows averaged 4-111)* of butter-fat for the. month of February, and the ten lowest Jllb- of butterfat per cow. One of the Oaonui factory suppliers received a cheque of about .1114:2 la-it month from 71) cows, at Ihc rate of Is per lb of butter-fat, which is a very good average. .Many in the herd are I purebred Jersevs. I The Methodist Harvest Thanksgiving I services were held on Sunday, Ist inst.. the licv. T. (!. Hammond, Maori misMoaI arv, preaching to a fair number iu the | morning, whilst Rev. T. \V. Featherstoue conducted the evening service. ! , The gift auction and concert was held ! on Wednesday in the hall, and passed oil successfully. The concert was opened by the Misses Itughson with a pianoforte duel, and songs wore rendered by Messrs Kelly and 0. llugbson. who were both in splendid, form. Master Bobbie Hughson gave a recitation in line style. The Messrs (indil brothers, new arrivals from Home, are quite an acquisition to the district, being players of the banjo and guitar respectively. The liev. 1!. I?. Tinsley thanked all those who had as aisled. Then the gift auction commenced, all the numerous gifts being disposed of. LINCOLN ROAD. Our district is still progressing steadily, and the record summer and autumn so far have assisted farmers in making many blades of grass grow where none grew before. Our school- teacher has received promotion to Kaimiro. Miss Meston just,ly deserves promotion, but the residents of the district are reluctant to part with her. Her position will be hard to fill. Some changes have taken place recently. A Mr. Brash has bought Mr. (liasford's place at the corner of Richmond and Lincoln roads. Mr. and Mrs. K* D. Stewart have left for Wangmiui. Mrs. U. D. Barford. when returning home from Inglewood the other evening, met with an unpleasant mishap, the result of her horse shying at a fire on the road, upsetting and smashing the gig. With the exception of sustaining a severe shock. Mrs. Barford and her baby boy escaped uninjured. On a previous occasion I referred to *ke excellent quality of the Moa Dairy Co.'s butter. Since then the companyhas received complimentary references from the Home agent and others interested in the company's output. It also "scooped the pool" at the Xew Ply■mouth Show, and we are looking confidently forward to some more. . Among the many "big guns" turned j out by this company, our present man [ager (Mr. W. Ross)'stands out pre-emi-nently, as he is not only capable of manufacturing a good article, but he also has the tact and skill to cope with the hundred and one important items which every day confront the manager of such a concern as this. A word of praise is also due lo such first-class as sistants as the head butter-maker. Mr. Hughie Botch, and also to tin* chief engineer. Mr. .lames Bowman. We have good cause to feel proud of our stall'. The. Everett road reserve has occasioned considerable controversy lately, and quite rightly too, only it ought to have been done before. The person who is no lover of natural beauty is certainly lacking one of the finest traits of mankind. It would be a very hardened and dull person who could walk the full length of the reserve along the banks of the Manganui and say there is no natural beauty. These reserves should be in the hands of some responsible and controlling body, and then they would soon become a valuable asset to any community. There are far too few left as it is.
