Taranaki sports have rejoiced this week at the success of the Taranaki horseman, Hector Gray, on Wallalo in the 'Stralian Cup. ' G-ay is alleged to have been laid a thousand pounds to nothing by the horses -owner, and another five hundred by a patron of the stable, so that he -h»s thrown in for a royal win. With bio- commissions for successful horsemen in practically all big events 011 the other side, it is a wonder that our leading riders are content to remain in New Zealand and pick up the crumbs scattered about here. Emmevson has done well on the other side, and Gray promises to do better. That the latter may settle down in Melbourne seems more than likely, and bein? a nice handy weight, and a vigorous- horseman combined, there is no reason whv he should not reach the top of the tree in 'Stralia as he has done in New Zealand. The Danncvirke Jockev Club's autumn meeting was got off this week in excellent weather. New tote records were hoisted —a standing order in these al- ' leged "hard times" —and when the figures for the two clays came to be totalled up it was found that this year's turnover was nearly eight thousand ahead of last year's.

The Dannevirke Club's success is certainly well deserved. The club's r.ew course nd up-to-date appointments were generally admired, and two enjoy-

able days' racing were prouded Fur tinbig crowd of sports who journeyed 0.. to Dannevirke ironi the Wanga;.:ii meet ii-igs. Favorites had a good time 011 the opening day, Kooya landing tile dip after an exciting race with Settlor and Braebuni, and other prim; fancies like Firing Line, Papa Mix and Zona were first home, while Mysturiarch and the boomed Orleans ran into second place in their engagements. I'hursd.iy sav. winners rather harder to pick, but then was ulenty of money for Ladify, Bonus and Firing Line when thev won. Kooya, fresh from winning at Woodville., was reliandiciippcd to carry 7.7 in the Dannevirke Cup, but punters miicr;ly sorted her out as the uiost libdy one to attract the judge'- eye. Their judgment was not at fault, though Settler looked all over a winner at the turn, and was just caught on the post, Braeburn's party were confident of success, but third place was their barren lot. The top-weight, Lord Renown, ran poorly, and appears to be all to uiccea. This nag appears- to be gone in the wind, and may never be as (rood as his party imagined when he followed Kilrain home in the Manawatu Cup. Eocene does not appear to advantage over six furlongs, and several thers were also racing beyond their distance. Aided by a dainty impost (6.10), and with W. Bell in the saddle, Hiwitapu won the Autumn Handicap on Thursday in hollow style. Hiwitapu (which is Dago for "sacred mountain") has always finished strongly in his races, and Mr Douglas's horse may be heard of in "distance" events later on. Since, winning at Awapnni -before the new year, Hiwitapu has had a good innings, and it is hard to understand why the handieappcrs have written him down as a non-stayer. A big dividend in the Maiden was a bad start for punters on Wednesday, the winner turning up in Montano, who scored a flukey win from Mystified (second favorite), who just beat the public's choice —New York. The latter is ? half-brother to Mahoe, and carries Mr. Bull's colors. He scored on Thursday by a head only from Vladineau, and cannot be anything out of the oruinary. Firing Line is probably nothing Better than one of tlie ordinarv "useful" stamp, but struck "cheap" lots each day, a;.d added two more wins to his credit. Tavistock and Indigo led the other two-year-olds home each day, and the only other surprising event was the easy defeat of Orleans in the Hack Handicap, and again in the Welter on the second day. Orleans, we were led to believe, was an absolute watch-breaker. Probably the enthusiasts mear.t a "pocket-breaker! The hurdle race on the first dav was a queer event. Papalitz, who was a firm favorite, fell to his nose as the field got into its stride, W. D. Younf? hangin" round the horse's nock for a few moments and then succeeding in regaining his seat. Bv this time the others had gained a "break" of about 100 yards. Then the "timber-smashers" got to work, levelling everv fence, and Papalitz had practically a flat nice on his own. and won easib- at the finish. Some of the "hurdlers" seen out at Dannevirke appeared to have never sec.: a hurdle in their lives hefore! Rigo Park was henvilv backed away from the course on Wednesday, hut could onlv finish fourth in the Mnkirildri Handicap. Ladifv was the hot order the second day, and Declev landed the "good thing" a winner by a length from Orleans. La Favorita, a much-'noomed twn-year-old from the Highden stable, wns well backed each dav at Dannevirke. hut failed after getting awav well. Tavistock and Indigo, who filled the places, are spoken of as a promising pair ,T. Conquest, the well-known jockcv, who was injured at the Wanganui races on Saturday last, was discharged from the hospital of that town on Wednesday. Radnor, who won the Victoria St. Leger on Saturday, was formerly owned by the Sydney' trainer, I. Earnshaw, but after finishing second to Beragoon in the Derby at Randwick and occupying a similar position in the Victoria Derby, he was sold to the West Australian owner, Mr. S. P. Maekay. He immediately got back a good share of his purchase' money by winning the C. B. Fisher Plate, in which he had Andelosia and Geragoon behind him. /On being taken to Perth, he won the West Australian Derby and the Grandstand Plate, Saturday's race being his first since his return to the eastern part of thp. Com,monwealth. On spring form, in the absence of Beriigoou. the St. Leger looked a good thing for Radnor, as the best of the otherß, Andelosia, was generally regarded as only a sprinter. His connections, however, harbored an idea that he had developed stamina, and it is probable that the backers of Radnor received a good price. The result of the race simply confirmed spring running, so far as these two were concerned, and in view of the weakness of (he older horses, Radnor should add to his record in weight-for-age events before long. At the Australian Jockey Club's meeting at Easter we may expect to hear .•f him' s renewing hostilities with Beragoon, who is specially in reserve for the •big Sydney fixture. It seems rather surprising that so shrewd a judge as I. Earnshaw should have sold Radnor just because he had failed to beat Beragoon in the Derby contests. Beragoon, though a brilliant galloper, has more than, been suspected of unsoundness, a fact which was worth taking into serious consideration in sizing up Radnor's prospects. The chance of seeing these two wits in action again should add interest to the racing at Randwick next month. Radnor's sire, I'hirlston. is an imported horse by Love Wisely (son of Wisdom) from Monday, by " Wenlock— Settling Day, by Doncastcr—Vex, a sister to Galopin. Bnrletta, the dam of Radnor, is by Wallace- La Toseii. by Rob'mson Crusoe—Nightmare. Radnor is therefore a member of a notable family, which has produced many big winners in Australia and New Zealand, Burletta is a sister to the Victoria DerVy winner, F. .1. A., as well as ti> Class (dam of.Hon Ton). La Notte (dam of Sun) is a llnlf-sister to Hurlelta, while Dreamer (dam of Sunburnt) arc other New Zealand representatives of the family, which also gained much fame in earlier days in Australia through the deeds of Commotion, Mentor and Wakefield.—Christchurch Star.
