RAILWAY DEFECTS.
DEPUTATION" TO THE MINISTER. By Telegraph—Press Association. Palmerston N., Thursday. The Hon. W. U. Herrios met a deputation from the Borough Council, the Chamber of Commerce and other citizens this evening'. Besides local requirements, a reduction ot freight on foreign coal and hurdwood timber was asked for to inland towns, which was considered a hardship. The .Minister replied that he could not see his way clear to alter the conditions at present. The Chamber of Commerce asked that the freight 011 wool sent back to the country for scouring should be reduced. A 1 eduction was also asked for on licnip 1 sent back that had bei-n damaged by water for drying. The shiirUi"c of trucks and delay and loss to business men were mentioned, and the Minister was asked to remedy the defects. Air. Herries replied, regarding the wool, coal and hemp, that these matters had already been brought before the Department. The question of titrili" was beiii" revised, and he hoped to bring about improvements. He wanted to see his way clear to make up the revenue in some other way before alterations were made. He could not see his way clear at present to make the concessions amed tor 011 wool. The Department was endeavoring to cope with the shortage or trucks, and more were being constructed. The abnormal season had accounted in a large measure for the deficiency.
