WAREA. The annual school picnic was held in the hall and in the grounds in vicinity on Friday, February 27. ' ! '■ showery weather ill the morning was not altogether favorable for the outm;;. but still that did not damp the spirits of the young' folk and their parents, for about 11 o'clock there was quite a large crowd of people. Shortly afterwards they did justice, to the delicious refreshments that were handed round. Then came the great event of the day, viz., the distribution of priaes. Before distributing the books, the chairman (.Mr. T. Julian) made a few remarks appropriate to the occasion. He urged the children to attend school regularly and always do their utmost for the good of their school. lie then called for three hearty cheers for ihe teachers. I very much regret to record the death of Mr. and Mrs. John Wheeler's third sun, Harry, which occurred at an early hour on Tuesday, February 24. The cause of death was acute appendicitis. The funci-ul of deceased look place oil the following Thursday, and was attended by a very large number of relatives ami friends from all over the district. Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler have the sincere sympathy of a considerable number of residents in their sad loss. I hear that Mr.,.John Dombroski lias disposed of his (id-acre farm to ill'. A. Dodunski at the satisfactory figure of £2l 15s per acre. Foreman Jones has made a start in putting down the few chains of metal on the top of Durham road west. This metal has been lying in a heap for somewhere about twelve, months. This work will give every settler on the road metal to his gate. It is to be hoped the weather will enable the job to be completed this time. Certain visitors to the New Plymouth Show voice the opinion that the all'air was not satisfactory, but I have never heard yet of anything for the farmers' benefit satisfying everyone. Faultfinders can bear in mind that they can attend initial meetings and bring forth sugestions for improvements, and which, I feel sure, would be gladly received. It is to be hoped it does not foreshadow an early and severe winter. We have been treated fairly well for one or two seasons. In fact, the weather prophet has given lithe nearest approach to a "square deal" that we are ever likely to get. On nearly every road in the district one will And several residents who have fault to find with the present system of maintenance, and there is not tlie slightest doubt that good reasons are to be found for the dissatisfaction. The mileage one man has to traverse and keep <
