A PROGRESSIVE DISTRICT.

UPPER CARBINGTON AND PRANK LEY ROAD.

Yesterday was a red-letter day iu the history of the Upner Carrington ami Frankley roads districts, when the opening of the road connecting the two Toads, 70 chains in length and perfectly graded, \va9 celebrated by a picnic on Mr Bryden's beautiful property. There was a large attendance, despite the rather unfavorable weather, and a happy time was spent. A number of events were got off, and an el fresco luncheon Was given in the bush on Mr Gilbert's property. Our detailed account is held over, owing to pressure of space, but following is the result of the different competitions:— Stepping the chain—H. Orozier and E. Lobb, a tie. Twenty starters. Pole-vaulting—S. Wells 1. High jump—Peppereli (4in) 1, I Wells (scr) 2. Eleven entries. Ladies' chain-stepping—Mrs Whittle ). Mrs Yeates 2.

Tug-of-war.—Frankley road proved easily too good for Carrington road. Gig and umbrella race—P. Gilbert 1. D. Crozier 2. Sixteen started. Married ladies' race—Mrs Page 1. Mrs Wells 2.

Ladies' nail-driving—Miss Ulmev 1, Mrs R. Marsh 2. A close finish, ftft'-v a dead beat. Twelve started. In the evening a social and dance was held at the Carrington School, whor, there was a large attendance.
