ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
A CONTRACTOR DROWNED. • By Telegraph—Press Association. Hokitika, Tuesday. A fatal accident took place at seven this morning at the south wall x Works of the Hokitika Harbjr. Thomaß Savage, aged 45, one of the contractors, lost his footing and fell into the river. He was swept out to tea and drowned. The contract was almost completed. Th»re was a slight flood in the river at the time. Tlifc body lias not yet ken re* covered. THE TE ARAROA FATALITY. ■ Gisborne, Tuesday. Further particulars of the Te Ar&roa fatality show that, while the circumstances were peculiar enough to suggest foul play, Dr. Davis' evidence showed that deceased's heart wae in such A weak state that he might have fallen down dead at any time. The fracture - of the base of the skull was caused by coining into contact .with some object, but there was nothing to show that the nun had been struck by any implemeirt.
PTOMAINE POISONING. Palmcrston N., Last Night. While attending the Raumai gale today, several farmers, including Messrs. Sandilands, of Colyton, and Buchanan, of Kairanga, partook of some pickled pork, and shortly afterwards were attacked with ptomaine, poisoning. Some of the victims were conveyed to the Palmerston Public Hospital, and othen to private hospitals, where they were attended by Dr. Putnam. Sandilands and another were seriously ill, but art improving, and the others are also recovering. A FARMER'S SUICIDE. , Ashburton, Last Night The body of a single man, named Frederick William Frampton, 28 yean ■ of age, a farmer at Willowby, wai found beneath an annle tree in the or--chard near his residence late yesterday ; afternoon. A double-barrelled gun was lying beside the body, and a wound in'-, '.he left breast was evidently the cause of doath.. At the inque&t this morning ■■■■, the coroner returned a verdict of suicide while temporarily ii.sane.
