When. 011 Sunday night, .lames Queen travelled down the Wairoi River to llelonsville, his cabin mate wa-> an elder!y native named Mihaka. In the morning Queen found that £HO had been abstracted from the 'lockets of Ms troupers, ill whieb be slept. Mihaka was very sympathetic, and offered to lend him £l. When the Helensyillo police bewail to make enquiries. it was found that Mihaka had left on the Auckland train. The telephone was put into use, and Mihaka was caught and interviewed by detectives. Asked to show all tkc money lie had, Mihakf) turned 12 12# lid out of bis pocket'', and said lie would submit to a search if the deteo* tives didn't believe him. They didn't, and bis offer was acceptei'. The search proceeded, but there was no further cash in his clothes. II" was then ordered to take off liia b -ots, which h* did very gingerly, stating that he ha I a sore foot, lie flinched, and made a remark about ''very sore" as a searching hand was put on one of his stockinged feet; but the detectives were inexorable, anil in the heel of the sock on the "sore foot" they found ten sovereigns. The result was Mihaku'g immediate arrest on a charge ol havine stolen Queen's money. The native appeared before Mr Frazer, S.M.; this morning, and was remanded for a week.
