MAN'S CAPACITY. Sir Frederick Treves, the celebrated English surgeon, recently described the capacity a man has for "working when work becomes distasteful" as the essential quality for success in life. Here are some further aphorisms from his speech:—"lf you have a fault, and realise it, you have done nearly half the work to remove it. You are not waiting for good fortune; good fortune iB waiting for you. If you want to do well, keep working, keep clean—bodily, mentally and morally and keep straight. I have no great belief either in talent or genius. If they were going to be poets, dramatists, inventors or artists, cleverness, brilliancy and genius might possibly be of service, but so far as the hard work of life' was concerned lie was' compelled to say he had not witnesnd in those around him any striking proof of its great utility." THE MONEY MARKET. Since our last report (says tho Trade Review, in commenting on the position .of the money market), there has not |'been any very pronounced movement to'wards easier conditions, but the ten'.dency of the market is in that direction, and there is a gradual easing going on. The realisations from our exports arc coming in now, and helping the position, and before long the Government loan money will be available. When this money gets into circulation, say, in another two months, it will materially assist the money supply locally, and stimulate trade all*round." Our exports are keeping up splendidly in volume, being on the whole well ahead of last season, and the prices realised are. maintaining an excellent level, so that when the season closes we should see a total value ahead of all previous records. We look for a gradual hut steady improvement in the monetary position from now onwards, and a good period of steady satisfactory trading in all sections.
