AN UNPLEASANT SURPRISE.
POUCH RAID.
ON WAITARA PREMISES. Two residents of Waitara, Thomas Hellier ami Roy Jury, had an unpleasant .surprise on Saturday afternoon last, when their respective premises were raided by a party of police, with the result that the alleged offenders were charged with keeping common gaminghouses und with having kept ''books" on races.
[ Senior-Sergeant lfciddrell, with Constables OWvill. Roulton, Wroblenski and Brown, went to WaiUivi, where they picked up Constable Unouplc. They then divided, throe going to .fury's premises and three to liellier's. A search revealed certain books of accounts which were taken possession of by the police. The two accused wcr« arrested, a general scatter of those who were on the premises taking pkee in quick time.. .Tiny and Hellier' wefe then taken before a justice of the peace on the charges mentioned, and were remanded to appear at the Waitera Conrt on Wednesday next, bail being allowed to Jury on his own recognisances of i'2o, and one other of £2O, and to Hellicr one on his own recognisance of £2O. Jury is a billiard saloon keeper and barber, and Hollier is ft tobacconist, stationer, and billiard saloon keeper.
