A Loudon cable uessage states that the Earl of Minto is dead. Mr W. Routlev, of Ohristchnreh, formerly of Eltham and Kaponga, is on a visit to New Plymouth, A Ilobart cablegram reports that the Earl and Countess Grey and Lady Sybil drey are passengers by the Ma.ung.inui. Mi- V. \V. Mansfield, Registrar-Gene-ral, was in New Plymouth on Saturday, leaving by the boat for Oiiehungii in the evening. Mr Allj.-rl E. Jtaiusdi'ii has been :;.»• pointed to succeed his Jate father as mill manager of tho Petone W'ool.'en Mills Company. The Rev. Mr Cniicksliauk, formerly Taranaki Backbhjcks Missioner, and who has just returned from a trip to England, is on a brief visit to New Plymouth. The Rev. William Wm. Beckett, formerly of Woodville, has accepted an invitation to succeed Rev. 11. H. Ginger at the Hutt. Mr. Beckett has left for a visit to his parents in Victoria. Mr. Harry Muller, formerly of Palmerston North, has been appointed to succeed Mr. William Douglas as general manager for the lirennan-Ftiller Vaudeville Proprietary in New Zealand. Sir Walter Buchanan, M.P., assured an Age reporter recently that he would definitely be a candidate for the Wainirapa scat, at the next election, and that he had made no statement which could be interpreted as an indication that this would be the last occasion upon which he would offer himself. Mr. JShoppanl, at present on the stall of the Magistrate's Court, New Plvmonth, has received notice of his promotion to the office of the Justice Department, Wellington. Mr. Sheppard has been a most cowleous and obligiu«'officor, and is to be congratulated on his promotion. He will be succeeded by Mr. Rhodes, of the Auckland Magistrate's Court.

The death is reported by cable from London of Canon Driver, the well-known Hebrew scholar and liiblical critic. The Rev. Samuel ftolh-i Driver was born in IMG. lie was educate:! at Winchester and New College. Oxford, of which he was fellow and tutor. He was a member of the Old Testament Revision Committee in 187-0, and was appointed Professor of Hebrew at Oxford in ISS3. lie has published many books on Hebrew and liiblical criticism.
A Wellington telegram states that the following have passed tlie New Plymouth tcac-hers' examination for cortilicates held in January. Mr. W. F. Cordon, who is retiring 1 from his position in the Xew Plymouth Lands and Survey Department after 41 years' service, was on Friday afternoon made (lie recipient of a handsome timepiece at the handa of his fellow officers. Mr. (!. It. Milliard, Commissioner of Crown Lauds, made the presentation, accompanying it by a few well-c.hcscn remarks. Mr. Lowe, chief draughtsman, in a short speech, testiiied to Mr. Gordon's zeal and efficiency. Mr. Follett Oarrington conveyed the? good wishes of himself and Mr. W. 11. Skinner, Commissioner of Crown Lands at Blenheim, to Mr. Cordon. The recipient suitably responded, referring to his long * and pleasant connection with the office.
