Taranaki Show.

PEOPLE'S DAY. A GOOD ATTENUANCE, j Hiitlicr wintry conditions jjrc;v;iilcd for People's Day lit tiln Taranaki Show yesterday, and, everything considered, tin 1 attendance must be accounted very good. The morning broke cold and threatening, not by any means kindly enough to tempt people to catch early trains or to come any distance to view the show, and as a result the attendance in the morning was poor. Later in. the day. when conditions improved (although tlic wind remained keen), people began to roll into New Plymouth from the surrounding countryside by car, buggy and trap, and the attendance was swelled by the afternoon special train contingent and the lialf-'holiday town visitors. There must have been fully COOO on the ground when tile grand parade came on. The country people, as usual, supported the society well, and fully 1200 or 1400 departed by the two special trains in the evening. The gate takings for the day were over £l2O, which, while not approaching last year's record, is more than the amount taken on both days of the last spring show. The judging of the hack afid harness horses proceeded very expeditiously, the stewards being well up to their work. In fact, in one case they were too expeditious, as the ladies' harnessing competition (an innovation on the programme here) was got off whilst two of the competitors were being judged in another class.

There was one mishap during the afternoon, a gig being capsized. The driver escaped uninjured, hut his trap was rather damaged. The public interest in. and appreciation of, events would be greatly enhanced if some better system of notifying what was in progress was adopted. There is a small number-board in - use, hut it is in a corner and useless to all but competitors. The grand parade, which is, of course, the feature of People's Day at every agricultural show, was watched with interest. It is in the grand parade that the cursor* visitor gains his idea of the cattle exhibited. It was, indeed, a fine sight. There were no fewer than 70 head of cattle and SO horses participating. These did not by any means represent all the cattle entered, as many would not lead and so would not be tractable in the rinsr. It is a pity that exhibitors do not pay more attention to the training of their animals to lead, as they can he shown off to better advantage before the judge. The cattle parade wag headed by the Ilolsteins, with the magnificent champion bull, King Fayne Segis in the lead. ITe was followed by the reserve champion, King of Dominos. The chaniDions headed each respective section, and having gone through the performance so often, seemed to realise their importance. Three magnificent fat beasts—Herefords—completed an imposing parade. The horse parade was headed by the Clydesdales, Mr. Mitchell's Omyo. the champion, being the proud leader. There was a long string of Clydesdales, they being the most pomilar entry in the horse sections. Mr Perry's fine fourhorse team evoked universal admiration. The thoroughbreds were not so numerous as-of yore, aged stallions beinw conspicuous by their absence. The harness horses and hacks were both strong sections.

The whole parade was capably marshalled bv Mr F. Watson. The competitions were then continued. Til the jumping events there were not such large entries as last vear, nor was the jumping on the whole as gqod, though some excellent exhibitions were witnessed. The afternoon passed off without any mishaps in these events. One rider was unseated, but he made a brilliant recovery. Though ( »i«ht horses had entered in the ladies' hunters competition, the event did not eventuate, as no lady riders were available. There were one or two protests entered over till) jumping, but they were not decided last night.

The champion jumping competition, which was annexed on the two previous occasions by Patterson's Haero, fell this year to Brewer's Utility. Foreman's Red Gauntlet was runner-up. The Dngald Cup competition, a new event for maiden hunters, went to Boyce's Hero. Chanev's Drudgery won the steeplechase event, and Mitchell's Princes the ponyleaping. Mr A. L. Humphries, the secretary, came through the ordeal of his first autumn show with (lying colors. He noted several improvements that will probably be introduced next year. He was ever courteous and obliging to though at times assailed by questions on all sides. The stewards all worked well, particularly those in charge of the two guessing competitions, viz., the weight of a fat cow and also the weight of a cake presented by the Hygienic Bakerv. Much interest was centred iu the green fodder competition, for which five entries were received. Farmers are very much alive nowadays to the importance of devoting their attention to the best milk and butter-fat producing foods. C'liou Moellicr and Silver Beet, appeared to claim a good deal of attention. Mr. A. S. I rost's fine collection for exhibition only wafr much admired. It comprised Alsike. Cowgrass, Crimson Clover, Red Clover. Lucerne, Timothy, Phalaris Bullosa, Sheep's Burnet, Sanfoin, Sarradella, Rape, Cliou Moellicr, Corn, Japanese Millet. Silver Beet, Italian Rye, Pancium Glabruni, Oats, Barley and Turips. Many of these were new to spectators, and their merits and demerits were agcrly [ discussed. This is undoubtedly the utilitarian side of shows and should be en- [ eouraged.

In judging the lady driving cempetiioii on ednesday, the judge remarked that the ladies (Misses Whcatley and May Sole) were two of the best lady drivers he had ever seen. The few side-show.s present appeared to do good -business, as did also Mr. » 00l er, the caterer, and Mr E. Whittle who hail the booth. Ihe Taranaki Garrison Band under, •andmaster Cummins, rendered a deiiglitlul programme of music. The playing of the band and the snick and span appearance in their regimental uniforms «as .greatly admired. During the afternoon the Hon. ,Tas. Allen visited the show grounds. He was shown over the grounds by the presii cnt. Mr ,1. B. Oonnett, and the vicepresidents. Messrs. n. ,T. TI ok-»- MP mouth! W " Mayor of
