Mr. A. K. Sykes left for Napier Yesterday, v 3 Mr and Mrs J. H. Qnilliam, of New Plymouth, left for London by the lonic yesterday. " The death is reported from Palmersto 11 North of William Malcolm, aged 81 an old settler, late of Bangiora. The Rev. d. W. Burton is at present attending the Dominion Methodist conference at Duncdin, which will occupy some days. The Hon. Jas. Allen left New Plymouth by the mail train for Wellington this morning. He proceeds to Dunedin on Monday. Professor Scott, Dean of the Medical School at Otago University,, and a member of the University Senate, is dead (states a Press Association wire). Deceased was secretary of the Otago Art Society and a member of the Otago Institttte.

The death is announced of Captain J. Small Pender, at Diranean, in Perthshire, early last month. The late Captain Pender retired from the Union Company's service about six years ago. Among the vessels he commanded were the Upolu and Comma. Mr. Joseph Fels, the millionaire singlctaxcr and philanthropist, whose death is just reported from Philadelphia, was born in 1854. He began business as a travelling salesman for toilet soap manufacturers, and later, with his father, engaged in soap manufacture, manufacturing an exclusive brand. In 1901 the firm established a selling branch, in E»gfwd. In 1!>05 Mr. Fels became deeply interested in the single-tax propaganda, and gave large amounts of money and much time to the cause. He' founded the Joseph Fels fund of America, to which he contributed 25,000 dollars annually for five years, and also founded similar funds in almost every city of the globe. Mr. Fels purchased 1300 acres at Hallcsley Bay, England, to form a Labor colony for unemployed, which was later taken over by the Government. He also purchased land at Marylands, Essex, England, which was put under cultivation by small holders. He was a frequent contributor to magazines.
