EDUCATION BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING. At the monthly meeting of the Taranaki Education Board yesterday there, were present, Messrs 11. Trimb'e (chairman), W. L. Kennedy, G. A. Adlani, B. Masters, A. M. Bradbury, J. Young, Rogers, and A. Morton. TECHNICAL COLLa-fE REPORT. The director of technical education (Mr. A. Gray), reported thut the day classes resumed on the 9tli imt. The numbers present in the various l classes were:—Commercial, 29 -iris, 8 boys, total 37; domestic, 13 girls; in.lustrial, 20 boys; total, 70. lie had been notified regarding several other students who intend taking up one or other o," the courses at an early date. The 'n.sfcruttors recently appointed by the Board had all taken up their duties, with the exception of the dressmaking instructress, who would start on March Ist. Last year six students attending the day classes sat for the junior civil and intermediate examinat'ons, and were successful in passing. The new woodwork room was completed, and was beinir used by +)i« woodwork classes. The night classes would resume on March 2.
i He recommended that the Agriculj tural Instructor be provided with a motor cycle. He asked for one hundred hat pegs for the girls' department, 'and for the engineering department he recommended that application be made to the Education Department for a quantity of apparatus, which he detailed. The times and special subjects in the day classes wore as follows: '—Commercial: Bookkeeping six hours, shorthand and typing four hours, correspondence and ollice routine four hours, commercial arithmetic on« hour. 'Domestic course: Dressmaking six hours, laundry work two hours, cookery two hours, domestic hygiene and housewifery two hours, home nursing one hour. Industrial course: Mechanical engineering six hours, electrical engineering and machine drawing and construction three hours each, mathematics and carpentry two hours each. The remainder of the time was oecupied by all pupils with English, arithmetic,-sing-ing, physical culture, etc.
Night Classes—He proposed to pay 5s per hour to night-class instructors, who were as follows:—Latin, Mr. Mcllroy; commercial subjects, Mr. Duff; cookery, Miss Grant; dressmaking, (Miss Bell; freehand and mechanical drawing, Mr. Button, N.8.A.A.M., London; mathematics, Miss Stott; engineering and machine drawing and construction, Mr. , Kirkpatrick, A.C.S.E.; carpentry, Mr. Sandford; analytical and dairy chemistry, Mr. A. H. Hustwick; elreution, Mr. I J. Ainslee; cabinet making, Mr. Riddles; I English, Mr. A. Gray; plumbing, Mr. H. Smart, The report was adopted.
.FINANCE COMMITTEE'S REPORT. The report was adopted, CHAIRMAN'S REPORT. I . The chairman reported regarding the request of the Pui-haui scliuol committee for better provision for crossing the Makefcuva river at the upper end of Norfolk road, that he had inspected the present crossing and found that the log ' ' ' "'id been used for some years was showing signs of decay, especially at one end, and was not rcallv worth the expense of a new hand-rail. If the Board would find the necessary material the settlers "would erect a light swing brid«e. which would answer their purposes for many years, and he recommended that this should be done. The present crossing was between Messrs Penett's and -Dombroski's farms, and was about SO feet from bank to bank of the river. It was decided to fall in with this arrangement. He also reported that the following appointments have been made, to be taken up on the Ist April:— Kalmata, Mr. R. 11. Cutler (head teacher); Kaimirn, Miss Meston (head teacher); Hillsborough, Miss McCarty (head teacher) • rataraimaka, Mrs. Moss (sole teacher) \ limiho, Miss Maekay (sole teacher) as from February 1, 1014; Tuna, Mr .7 A.
