pOIU'NIUIITLY MEKTI X(.i. At the fortnightly meeting of the Xew Plymouth Borough Council last night there were present: His \Torship the Mayor and Crs. W. Healy, V. \, •luekson, .1. Kibby, A. 11. Johnstone, A. E. Sykcs, W. A. Collin, .). Clarke, (Jeo. Tabor, J. E. Wilson, J. T. Mannix, and N. T. Maunder. Mr. F. Black, Consulting Engineer to the Council, was also in attendance INSANITARY RUILMXCiS. • Dr. Chcsson (District Health Officer) furnished reports with reference to certain stables in various parts of the town, which, he stated, were insanitary. He forwarded condemnation certificates which would lie put in action should the owners not at once carry out the necessary alteration*. In a further letter Dr. Chessofi referred to an inspection he had made of a residence in Young street. He. was of opinion that the premises were insanitary and unlit for habitation, and if the owner could not remedy this thoy would have to bo pulled down. He detailed the work required, and suggested that the Council ascertain if the owner was prepared to do the work; if not, he would issue the necessary condemnation certificate.
Copies of the letters will be sent to cite persons mentioned, and the Counoi, oil will take action ns suggested, unlo« the improvements are effected within It days. BROITIHAM STREET HALL. Dr. Chcsson also reported that he had inspected the Brougham Street Hall, and suggested that the Council should issue a requisition to the owner and occupier to provide for tho carrying of storm water to the street channels. Action was deferred until tho footpath is brought up to its proper level. A WITHDRAWAL WANTED. Mr. D. Ilutehen wrote that he had been consulted by Mr. A. Bartlett, the proprietor of the Dominion Billiard Saloon \rith reference to a report of the Coun«m inspector that unlawful betting tm been'permitted iu his client's saloon. Hi j client denied this, and waa prepared to answer the charge in a court of law. He requested the Council t;i Kiibsbntiale the charge in « court of law or rise order the report to bo withdrawn.' Having regard tr> the seriousnesi of the charge as evidenced by the action Che Council had taken regarding it. he thought his client was entitled to have it withdrawn if it could not be proved.
To be referred to the Boromjli solicitor. GENERAL. Messrs. Covett and Quilliam ! wrote that they had received from tho solicitor for the objectors to tho Brougham street convenience £.50, which sum would be applied to tho reduction of costs, as agreed upon. The Borough. Engineer reported that tlla cost of putting Taranaki Lane in order would be £2lO, James* Lane £34, and Cirrie Lino £B3 10s. The Engineer was instructed to suoply Mr. G. W. Hartnell with up to 309 yards of earth on sections \5 and 10 at Is. per yard. The Engineer was instructed to report to the next meeting on the question at having the verandahs moved back to allow the tram-lines to lie hi id. The Inspector was instructed to report upr,n a complaint as to water alleged to lie lviuo- under a butcher's shop in Devon street. An application will be made to the Government for an allocation towards the protection and upkeep of' soldier,,' graves in the New Plymouth cemetery. The work in Watson street will be proceeded with immediately.
