LABOR LEGISLATION.

THE 1101,1 DAY BOOK. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Friday. Tin; first prosecution under section 7 of the Shops and, Oliices Amendment Act, 11113, which came into force on December 15 last, took place in the Magistrate's Court to-day, when three •hotel employees were charged with having failed to .sign tlioir names in the holiday book. Section 7of the amending Act of 1013 replaced section i) of the main amending Act. which provided for the keeping of a holiday hook, showing the day on which each hotel worker is allowed a half-holiday. The clause has been further amended by the 1018 Act, by the provision of the following subclause:—"Every assistant who fails to sign the reeord as provided hy this section, or who signs an incorrect record, is liable to a line of ;Cl." In Jo-day's action the informant was the Inspector of Factories, who explained that under the 101# Act the record book was not effective, because of negligence on the part of the employees who signed it. ,The amendment of the last session was passed for the purpose of ensuring a correct record of the observance of a . holiday. As this was the first case of its kind, only nominal penalties were imposed.
