I TARANAKI v. AUCKLAND. The ]»ipiiost t-voiit of the coining tennis wool;'will lie the match lu-tivci-ii •New Plymouth and Auckland, to in' •placed on till' New Plymouth courts on Tuesday next. The New Zealand Hi-v----ald say's: "Owing to the inability of K. Duthie to in.'ikt.'' I In; trip to Taranaki. 11. W. Knelling will join the Auckland team. Much regret juts been expressed (hat Dulhie will not be in the team, for ■liis absence will undoubtedly weaken it. It would have been interesting also to have, seen the game he would have played against A. G. Wallace, the New Zealand champion. Most of the players leave for Taranaki within the next day or two, the majority of the ladies preferring to so overland. The remaining' members of the team will leave by •boat on Monday, and arrive on the morning of the match. Dr. A. I!. Met'ntcheon will captain the team." The following is the team picked to represent Taranaki:—Men: C. .1. Dickie, K. W. (IrilliUis, J. C. Nicholson, A. V. Thompson. A. (!. Wallace. (!. B. Webster; emergency, K. Cridiths. Ladies: Misses Brewster, Cross, Rundle, D. Simpson. V. Simpson and M. Thomson. SUNDAY PLAY. The vexed question of Sunday tennis came before the Victoria College Council recently, according to the Wellington Times', when an appeal was made to the Victoria College Council by the Students' Association against the prohibition laid by the Professorial Board on .the playing' of tennis on the college courts on Sunday. "1 think that 'the appeal of the students should be upheld," said Sir Robert Stout. "Men in high positions play golf on Sundays at Mirniuar, and the Hutt. Even some of the Professorial Board have been known to play golf and tennis on Sunday. The Hon. A. L. Ilerdman: ''When a section of the community is offended at Sunday tennis, their feelings should !>e considered. I have no objection to tennis on Sunday as such." Mr. Morrison: "There is a distinction between a game played in the country and one in the centre of a residential area." j Sir. Robert Stout: "Then the limit of liberty is the opinion of the minority. Trams run on Sunday, swimming occurs •on Sunday—to be logical, everything must cease. If any person objected to see,the students playing, lie could turn away his head. The only result of the. •.prohibition would be to drive the stni.dents to play tennis at Day's Bay." ■ The Professorial Board's prohibition was upheld.
