THE RECENT STRIKE.
FARMERS' SERVICES EULOGISED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Wednesday. In the course of his presidential nd--1 dress at the annual meeting- of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce to-day, Mr. S. J. Natlran referred to the recent I strike. The trouble, he said, had been tactfully dealt with by the Mayor, the chairman of the llarbor Hoard, and the Citizens' Defence Committee, supported by the splendid assistance of-'the special constables, both from the city and country districts. ''The services so freely and generously rendered by the special constables, and so ably performed," said Mr. Nathan, ''are gratefully recognised by this city, and will never be forgotten by those who witnessed the fine discipline and forbearance of the men undur trying' circumstances. Indeed, our country friends, with their horses, saved tiie situation, and we now know that should any similar trouble arise the farmers . will be. ready to come again aud help us, and in increased numbers, should such be required." Capital and Labor, added Mr. Nathan, were inter-depend-ent. A mutual agreement based 011 this understanding would do much to obviate a recurrence of labor disputes. The Mayor (Mr. C. J. Parr) snid that in the recent strike there had only been one course to take, and he had taken it fearlessly.
