BISHOP JULIUS AND WOMEN
"MAD DOINGS OF MILITANT I SUFFRAGETTES." By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The annual festival of the Mothers' Union was celebrated to-day. The service, which was very largely attended, was held in the Cathedral t&is morning, when the sermon was preached by Bishop Julius. i| ,j«i| The Bishop said it wis easy to understand the gravity of the problem before women. Many there were in doubt regarding the movements of today, and many were ready to condemn the new movement. Many thought that the proper place for women was in the home alone, and did not believe iu change. Others realised the perplexities and difficulties of the movement, and therefore condemned it. Those who bad heard only of mad doings of the militant suffragettes doubted that the movement was good. There were those who said that women should have the same rights as man, and others again said that thi3 was utterly wrong j and that equality was not to be talked of. There were masculine women and cll'cminatc men, and there were women trying to push themselves into positions they could never occupy with profit to themselves or to others. The Bible-in-schools question was one iu which mothers and women generally in New Zealand could help greatly. H they realised that religious teaching was the basis of all that was pure and unselfish in life they would have the Bible in schools at once. There should be no talk of equality in oil things between men and women. God had made a very real distinction, and the proper development of human life lay in the co-opera-tion of one with the other.
