STRATFORD NEWS.

FROM OUR RESIDENT REPORTER. Office and Job Printing Works: York Chambers (upstairs) Telephone No. 113.

THE SWIMMING CARNIVAL A BRILLIANT SUCCESS. Members of the Stratford Amateur Swiming Club have every reason to congratulate themselves on the. swiimning carnival whidi was held in the 'local baths on Tuesday treuing. The organisation was perfect, the ollieials all worked will, were strongly supported I by the members, and nil that was required to ensure success was fine weather. Luckily this was forthcoming. Indeed, in this respect Stratford excelled itself, the night being warm and sultry. The attendance was a record, a striking feature being the number of the fan sex present. The baths were brilliantly lighted, and for, this a great deal of thanks is due to the Stratford Electric Supply Co. Big fields had entered in all the events, competitors coming in force from Hawera, Inglewood and Eltham, as well as locally. MOTOR TRAFFIC A CONFERENCE OF COUNTY COUNCILS. Mr \V. J. Tristram, Eltliam County Clerk, wrote to the Stratford County Council yesterday that the Kltliam County Council had, with a view to sect ring a uniform scale of charges ;it ai! toil gates (as well as the regntrati'oj- of the speed and weight of motors on county roads), resolved to invite all interested county councils to meet in conference. He asked whether the Council was prepared to join in the movement, and whether it would appoint delegates for that purpose, bo that a meeting could be arranged without delay and any decision arrived at be made operative as from the beginning of the next financial year. The Council were unanimously in favor of the conference, and resolved to appoint two delegates. It would be as well to have the various borough councils represented also, as the traffic through th» counties by n/ain road must traverse the boroughs.

NOXIOUS WEEDS SI'JtKAD JN STRATFORD COUNTY. Councillors at the tstratford County Council meeting on Wednesday refenv'd in strong terms to the spread of noxious weeds in the comity- and the neglect of the (Jovernment to cope with it. (.'r Walter, who brought up the matter, said that Stratford' County would soon lie a very undesirable! place to live in. One had only to wander about the town of Stratford to see that it was a veritable nursery and breeding-ground for all weeds, so what must the county be'; Many people were trying to cope with the spread of noxious weeds, but others were not. Continuing, he said that the state of affairs was a disgrace to the Government. One could lo k now and see ragwort everywhere in flower. Blackberry had been cut year after year, and people were now picking them by kerosene-tinfuls. There would be no satisfaction until the inspection of noxious weeds was in the hands of the county councils, where there was no political "pull.''

It was then unanimously resolved that the Government's attention be drawn to the alarming spread of noxious weeds in the Stratford County, and that unless more effective means were taken to eradicate these pests, the result would mean ruin to many settlers. This es-

pecially refer* to ragwort, blackberry, and Californian thistles. This resolution will be forwarded to the Minister through the member for the district.

BOWLING HAWERA v. STRATFORD. Four rinks from the Hawera Bowling Club played a match with a similar number from the Stratford Club yesterday, at Stratford, and after an "enjoyable game won the aggregate by 15 points, and the banner 'match by 12 points. The following are the detailed score 3, Hawera being mentioned first:— Spence, Tarrant, Robertson, Hollard (s) 23, v. Martin, Penn, Wright, King (s) 11. Keen, Bales, Grant, Hansen (s) 17, v. E. Jackson, Dingle, G. Jackson, McDonald (s) 13. Curtis, Hicks, Parrington, Foj; (s) 14, v. J. Masters, Brake. Sangster, Morison (s) 18. Syine, Robertson, Shore, Parkinson (s) 25, v Porritt, Reeve, McMillan, Smart (s) 22. Totals: Hawera 70, Stratford 04. For the banner match the .scores were: Hawera 65, Stratford 53. SUPREME COURT FOR STRATFORD j A REBUFF. At the Stratford County Council meeting, yesterday, a letter was received from the Stratford Chamber of Commerce asking the Council's support of the following resolution:—"That this Council urges the establishment of sittings of the Supreme Court at Strat- 1 ford, and authorises the Stratford Chamber of Commerce to interview the Minister of Justice in the matter" The letter stated that this «would be a convenience to the province generally, because its central position would enable litigants, counsel and witnesses to return to their homes daily, instead of having to stay the whole time until their business was disposed of, as was the case now at New Plymouth. A deputation from the Chamber of Commerce, the Borough Council, and the local Law Society would probably urge the matter on the Minister.

Members, apparently, did not like the idea of delegating their powers to another body, as was suggested in Hie resolution, and a motion to the effect that the action of the Chamber of Commerce, Borough Oeuncil, and Law Society re the establishment of Supreme Court sittings in Stratford be endorsed, was lost.
