GREAT EASTERN ENGAGES AN AMERICAN. Ot'TCRY IN BRITAIN, By Cable—Press Association—Copyright London, February 16. Lord Claud Hamilton, chairman of the Great Eastern Railway, says one reason for the appointment of Mr. Thornton, the American railwayman, to the managership, was his knowledge of electrical operation, and because it was suggested that any change of system should be confided to a man able to bring new ideas to bear on the work. Received 17, 8.55 p.m. London, February 17. The action of the Great Eastern Railway in obtaining a general manager from Ameriea is widely condemned in the Press. Some papers blame the system of declaring too many ornamental and useless directors, and giving insufficient encouragement to the staff. The Observer declares that not for many years has Britain received! such a shock to her pride, and adds that something must be wrong with the system of promotion. The editor Oi the Railway Review says that if Lord Hamilton's statement that it is impossible to get a capable Englishman for the position is true, | this is the greatest reflection upon English railway management that has been made for years, and asserts that there is plenty of ability among British railwaymen, but they are not given a chance.
The Westminster Gazette refuses to believe that Englishmen who are the pioneers of railway construction in the world, are incapable of managing the Great Eastsrn Railway.
