Merrett, an employee of the ttisborne Uorougji Council, has been received by the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand. On January iti Merrelt heard the cries of children who were on the Waikan.ie beach, and he was told that Florence Fmily Mai'deii. seven and a l*alf years old. had been swept out to sea. He went into the water fully clothed, and. after swimming '2ou yards through ]Mt surf, he caught sight of her. and ultimately, with the n-sislancc of another man, managed to get her ashore.
