The report of the Commissioners appointed to enquire into the cost if the transcontinental railway states that the Commission which had charge of the construction exercised no economy. Eight millions sterling was needlessly squandered and the original estimate exceeded five-fold. Many large contracting firms gained huge profits by subletting contracts and doing nothing whatever tnemselves. Parliamentary action is anticipated as the result of the report.
