I REPRESENTATIONS TO GOVERN- : MEXT. '< ALLEGATIONS OF CRUELTY. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, February 13. > Representations concerning the illtreatment of natives and miscarriage of justice in the- Xew Hebrides are now being made to the Colonial Secretary by .facombober residents, who declare that the old Doges of Venice and the Star Chamber were mild compared with the outrages perpetrated in the islands. A copy of the correspondence has been furnished to the. Association for tlie Protection of Native Races for considerate at a meeting on Monday. It is alleged that no witnesses for the defence of natives are ever heard. The accused are not allowed to be defended by counsel and are unable to defend themselves, owing to language difficulties. Sworn testimony is given of third degree methods which, if correct, Would cause an outcry even in China or Russia.
