Uunedin, Thursday. • In November the .Salvation Army purchased a property known as "Redj roofs," at Bishopscourt, to lie used as ja maternity hospital. Yesterday the | Mayor (Mr. W. Downie Stewart) forj mally opened the institution in tlie presence of citizens, friends and supporters. Commissioner lliehards, who came to Dunodin in company with Chief Sucre- ' tary Colonel Powlev, also delivered an address. The purchase price of the ■property was £3OOO, and they lime since spent £4OO in improvements, making a total of £4OOO. The building is admirably suited for the purpose for which it was acquired, apd there are three acres of land round the hospital. It contains &S beds for : patients. It was announced at Hie opening that £1063 had been guaranteed towards the. purchase of the property, which was acquired to perpetuate the memory of the founder and first, general of the Salvation Army, Ceneral Booth.
