TARANAKI AUTUMN -MEETING. A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. GOLDSIZE WINS THE CUP, The Taranaki Jockey Club's autumn meeting opened yesterday in glorious summer weather.' The attendance was large ami speculation brisk, the totaljsators handling the sum of £15,078 10s during the day, as against £12,840 last year, an increase of £2838 10s. But for small fields facing the starter in the Flying and Welter Handicaps, the total waald have been considerably larger. Stipendiary Steward McMahon was in attendance, and held an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Katua's fall in the hurdle race. After taking evidence, the mishap was judged to have been purely accidental. The jockey, 0. McCarten, was fined £5 for taking his mount (Patronymic) across to the rails in the Okato Handicap, the second horse not being more than two -dear lengths behind. Goldsize's victory in the Cup, though unexpected, was scored on its merits, and bigger sur-, prises awaited the public when Patronymic "downed" a hot favorite (Di Gama) in the Okato Hack Race, an* Play Off scored decisively over the heavily-backed Rewi Poto*and Gladiole i in the Plying Handicap. First favorites, Kurnalpi, Lord Lupin, Paoli and Tetikura won races, so that the public were "picking" fairly well. The feature of the gathering was the beautiful music supplied by Mr. Gerald Van Heck's orchestra. The public warmly I applauded the various selections. Mr. O'Connor was at his best in slipping the fields, the starts being uniformly good. Mr. W. H. Hartgill was prompt in hoisting the numbers, and his decisions were not questioned, though Mr. ; Geo. Morse's weight-adjustments resulted in several fine finishes. The cat- , ering left little to be desired, and the club's secretary, Mr. E. P. Webster, had everything moving smoothly. Following are details of the racing:
