ENGINEERING CERTIFICATES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. At the examinations held recently by the Inspector of Machinery, 219 candidates sat for various classes of engineers' certificates, and 170 passed. SUCCESSFUL LAND SALE. Feilding, Last Night. The most successful sale of grading and fattening land ever held here took place to-day when 400 acres of the Kawa Kawa Estate belonging to the Trustees of the Riddiford Estate was offered in sections from ten to 50 acres. The highest price realised was £BS for a ten-acre block. The whole piece averaged £65 an acre. Several sections went over £BO. Though prices were high generally, the opinion is that the investments are quite safe. . CONGREGATIONAL UNION. Auckland, Last Night. The lf)H meeting of the Congregational Union of New Zealand opened at the Town Hall Concert Chamber tonight, when a public welcome was tendered to the Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Adeney land visiting delegates. The Union Committee met this afternoon to arrange the business of the sessions and prepare reports. The annual meeting opens for Council business in the morning. In the evening, the address of the. chairman (Hon. George Fpwlds) will be submitted. CHINESE HOUSE RAIDED. Wellington, Last Night. Detective-Sergeant Cassels and two constables last night raided a house in Haining street, occupied by Wong Ling, and seized a quantity of pahjipoo gear. As a result. Wong Ling will be charged with keeping n gaming bouse, and Ah Lum, another Chinaman, will bo charged with assisting in the management of the same.
