The question of auctioneers' licenses, the number issued to any firm, and the .number of men who may conduct auction sales on account of such firm, at one nnd the same time, was aired at the Borough Council meeting on Monday night, and inquiry will be made. The Stratford Municipal Brass Band has kindly offered to render a programme of music at the hospital on a Sunday afternoon in the near future, and a collection will be taken up in aid of the hospital funds. The amount collected on Hospital Saturday for the Stratford Hospital was £fil 3s rid, and, with the. Covernment subsidy, the funds will benefit by sonic £144." Votes of thanks were passed by the Board yesterday to all who collected or otherwise assisted in the matter.
At the conclusion of the Borough Comwil meeting on Monday, the Mayor asked councillors individually and collectively to give what support they could to the lire brigade carnival, on the "round that the brigade wan a municipal organisation, whose efficiency was of vast importance, to the borough. His Worship was apparently aware of the fact that councillors have not yet rushed the organisers of the carnival or the committee meeting. "I should like to know who was responsible for the purchase of those concrete posts at the abattoirs. They're hardly big enough for u fowl run. Theyr'e tied up with wire to wooden posts."--Cr. Masters' challenge to his colleagues on the Coltntiil on Monday night was not taken up. for the man responsible was ho longer a member of the Council.
A motor car killed a dog in Broadway yesterday. The car is reported to have been travelling at only about 15 miles an hour!
A reminder is given of Satund.iy's sale by auction of the Crown Stables plant. TJhe Mayor and Councillor King 1 made very complimentary remarks on Monday night concerning the manner in which the .Council's stone-crusher had been set up by the borough engineer, Cr. King especially remarking that Mr. Sullivan should be congratulated upon the smooth manner in which the machine was working. The Mayor doubted whether any' local body in -Taranaki was so well equipped. _ This crusher was, perhaps, the nest investment the Council had ever made, with the exception of the steam road roller. The Mayor thought the Council might now make a. profit out of crushing metal for sale. lie complimented fhe engineer on having constructed bins for £4O or £SO, instead of expending £230 on purchasing bins.
