A WOMAN'S DEATH.

Some extraordinary allegations were made at the Coroner's Court yesterday during the course of an enquiry concerning the death of a young woman named Catherine Ann I learn, u'iio diej ci: Saturday last at, t'ro-s street, Newton. ' The evidence given by Dr. Williams at the for ilia i opening of the inquest. on Monday indicated that shock was the immediate cause of death. Joseph Draper, father of deceased, .stated that hi-; daughter and lie 1" husband hail resided with him prior to his daughter's death. (In Saturday last deceased complained of a headache, and went to lie (inwu on her bed. While she was resting, a bailiff named David- ' son, whom witness did not then know, opened the I'ron! door and walked into her room. Witness went in and asked the man what he wanted. The bailiff's reply was. "I'm Knrr.iuel. I want the property belonging to me, a-nd I'm go--ing to get it." While saving this, the hailitl' toidc hold of the bed that deceased was lying on. Witness told him to ffot out. whereupon the bailill' called him an ugl.v name. He again told the • bailiff to get out. and gave him a shove. ''lt was Cod's will that I should get him," continued witness, "and T grip- j ped Itini by the throat and put him out- j | side." A man. whom he now knew to he I Louis Emanuel, came along to help the |bailiff. With the assistance of deceased. lie succeeded iu pushing the -bailiff to the door, and Kmanuel then went away. Deceased complained of feeling j ill, and went hack to bed, but subsequently went into her sister-in-law's house next door. A little later witness heard a good deal of commotion outside. lie saw several people who appeared to be excited. The women folk return to his house, and five mill- ! utes later his wife called to him, "Come quickly! Kate is dead." ' Mr, Singer, for Emanuel, put questions which suggested that the bailiff had gone to the wrong house, he having sold furniture to deceased's sister-in-law, who lived next door, and subsequently proceeded there. Margaret liearn, sister-in-law of deceased, stated that she went into her own house and found Louis Emanuel and a man named Humphries in the bedroom shifting her furniture. Witness sent her children for deceased, who had co'.ue from the other house, and several other i women were standing at the top of the -• stairs. Emanuel took the clothes off : witness' -bed and threw them 011 the • floor, after which he tried to take the j bed to pieces. Deceased was standing 1 at the corner of the stairs with a poker in her hand, and Emanuel asked her for the poker. She replied, "You will get no poker here." Emanuel's reply was, 'Til get the poker, you and putting his hand 011 deceased's shoulder, he pushed her on one side, causing -her t,o fall. It was a deliberate push. A neighbor. Mrs. Jackson, picked deceased up and asked her whether she was hurt, end deceased's reply was, "No; I'm 111013 upset than hurt." The. furniture had bv this time been removed, and before they drove off deceased said to Ilenry Emanuel. "I'll make you prove what you said about me to Jackson," and Emanuel's reply was to spit into his fingers. Deceased, witness, her mother and several neighbors then went into the kitchen of deceased's house, and within a few minutes deceased became unwell from a miscarriage, and died in a few. minutes. Previously she had been in comparatively good health, except for a slight billious attack. Deceased had a fall 011 the previous Wednesday, but said that she was none the worse for the mishap. Rose Draper, mother of the deceased, gave evidence corroboratory of the 1 statement that deceased had been pushj cd over by Louis Emanuel.
The enquiry was adjourned for a week. ; ,
