SECOND HAY'S RESULTS. CILSUNAN THE CHAMPION. WIIANUAMOMOXA WIN THE TEAMS' -MATCH. Yesterday concluded what has been from every point of view a mosi, successful meeting, ami it is safe to say that tlic next shoot nuclei' the auspices of the Tarauaki Rilie Association will see Unite mi iiillnx or entrants, including ijiimbi'V-. l'rmii outside the provinc.'. Indeed, in anticipation of this, the range authorities intend lidding three shutter" targcts, which trill bring the number up to tlfteen.
As on the first day, everything again went oil' without a hitch. There was some delay in commencing operations, owing to tlii! Borough traction engine, which was working in the river, being in the line of lire at the long distance, range. However, as soon v.* the range officer notified those in charge of til.; engine, it was at once, removed furthoi up the river, and snooting then proceeded with as little delay as possible, with the result that the remaining matches were got over, and the teams' matches so far advanced as to enable the country shots, who were desirous of getting away by the afternoon train, to do so.
The wind was blowing as strongly across the range as on the previous day, though more at an angle. If it was baffling at the shorter ranges, it proved more so at the longer ones, and both old and young shots met their downfall.
The Stratford match was continued ■first, the 900 and 1000 yards ranges being lireii. Rfm. Gilshnan, wlt.li 34 and 20, improved his position, and headed the aggregates, lifm. Lovcday, with 25 and 30, dropped back to second place, and lifm. May-hew," with 31 and 25, taking third place. The others altered their positions but little, though Guy, with 12 and 30, went up from fifteenth place to fifth. Rfm. W. Winslade, with 07 at the three ranges, won the match, after a count back with Rfm. Gilshnan, who-, however, won the special prize for the aggregate at 800 and 900 yards.
When the men went down for the final ten shots at the. WOO yards' range, the position was very interesting. The Patea man. by his line score in the Stratford match, had crept into first position, and. with 301) points, was a point ahead of Rfm. l.oveday, with lifm. .Mayhew still one point further back. Good shots like Smith and Guy (Kaponga), Shepherd and Christian (Opunake), Armstrong (Whangamomoua), King (Inglewood), Nicholls and Evans (New Plymouth, were all within ten points of the leader, anil with the wind blowing, anything was possible. Interest was mainly centred in the three leaders. Lovcday and llilshuan went down in the first sipind. The former started off with three bulls, and the latter with a bull, an. inner, and a bull, and both were equal. The next three shots saw Gilshnan regain the lead with a 3, 5, 3, against Loveday's 4. 3. 5. Each found the black spot" with their next three sltots. Then, with bis final, Loveday got a magpie, and finish/id with 45, a shot ahead of G'ilshnan. who had to hit the target to tie. Tie. however, scored another bullseye. and totalled 47. ■ This proved sufficient to win the match, and also the championship, as Rifleman Mayhew had to score 4!) to tie nul a possihle to win. His first, shot was a five, but hi* next was a three, and that ended his chance. He scored 40 for the match, and got third in the aggregate. The final range of t'he leaders read Rfm. Gilshnan, 5.4.5,5.5,3,5,5,5.5—47; Rfm. Lovcday, 5.5,5,4,3.5,5,5,5.3 —45; ■Rfm. Mayhew, 5,3.3,4,5,4,5,5,4,2^10. The teams match brought out a record number of entries ten competing. The standard of shooting was, on the whole, low. Whangainomona, who were last but one of a field of nine last year. won with 4fi() points, and the narrow margin of two points from Kaponga A wlio got home ahead last year. The onh' possible of the day was put on in til's match by Sergeant Reg. Sole, of B Coy., New Plymouth, at 500 yards.
Colonel Okey again had charge of the I range. He was assisted at the firing point by Adjutant If. MacDonnell and and Lieutenant Humphrey (Tnglewoo. 1 .). The trenches were in charge of Lieutenant Boon and Sergeant-Major Armitsge. and nothing but praise was heard of the marking, although there were, of course several challenges. Still, the club's finan ccs will not benefit from this source to anything like the extent it did last year. The catering, in charge, of Sergeant Sontham and Vis willing band or volunteer assistants, was greatly appreciated, and contribute! materially to the success of the meeting. The secretary. President F. J. Hill, of the New Plymouth Club, got through his initial meeting with' flying colors. He was courteous to all enquirers (and they were immormiand varied) and kept his work right or. to date, and bad the prize lists out tc the moment. At the conclusion of the meeting, ire; President, Colonel Okey, lires.mted th' winners with their nrizes. The chatr i'pion. Rifleman H. Gilshnan, and the winning team, coming in for rounds or applause. The following are the detailed results:— STRATFORD MATCH. Seven shots at each of the SOD. 900 uid lflOvds ranges.
