Taranaki's Bisley

GOOD SHOOTING UNDER DIFFICULT CONDITION'S. A ItlvCOIil) GATIIKIUNG. CADETS PERFORM WELL. The fact thai tlic entries for tlio tenth annual meeting lieltl under Die auspices of the Taranaki Kifle Association constitute a record, proves beyond ' doiilit that the fixture is more than maintaining ils popularity among local and outside rifle shots. This is undoubtedly due to the excellent arrangements under which tiie fixture has been previously held, and these were quite up to the usual high standard yesterday. In all some 78 competitors had entered. Once again rifle clubs provide the bulk of the entrants. This is, perhaps, due to the fact that members of rifle clubs join these organisations primarily for the enjoyment they get out of shooting. Sixty-one competitors are from the rifle clubs. New Plymouth with Hi, and Kaponga with ten, are well represented. Stratford, Eltliatn, Whangamomona, Pohokura, Tahora, Fatea, Opunake, Inglewood, Mangorei, Fielding and Woodville also figure on the list of competitors. Among the Territorials, 1! Company, New Plymouth, stands out prominent with eight representatives. Stratford and Eltham are also represented. Two staff officers are also competing. The New Plymouth High School Cadets have also entered three boys, who are shooting remarkably well, and have touched prize money in every event. Indeed, to one of them (Candy) belongs the honor of scoring the first possible in the match at 500 yards. As there were only two other possibles scored during the day, the feat is all the more meritorious. Bifleman D. Armstrong (Whangamomona) obtained a possible at 300 yards, and Lieutenant Hartnell (New Plymouth) at 800 yards. The shooting throughout the day was held under trying conditions, particularly as regards the wind; a strong, gusty wind blowing right across the range and baffling all, both veterans anil tyros. At 000 yards, from 12 to 17 degrees windage had to be allowed. Naturally the shooting suffered, and tlu scores were points less than last year. The shooting was, however, very interesting, and there were numerous counts back to decide the'prize money. The light was dull for the most part, though in the afternoon it brightened up for a time. Fortunately, the raia held off during the day, though there was a heavy shower just at the conclusion of the day's shooting. The borough i traction engine, which was working' near by, caused some of the competitors to think deeply at limes when it cast a musty smoke across their vision.

The competitors included many wellknown New Zealand representatives, among whom mav be mentioned Riflemen W. Winslaile and A. 11. Guy. 'flic firstnamed is an ex-champion of Xew Zealand. Regret was expressed that Rifleman Roots, another ex-champion shot of the Dominion, had to leave Xew Plymouth and return to Wanganui owing to a family bereavement. Local rille enthusiasts were looking forward with interest to the meeting of these two champions. The arrangements for the meeting arc in eharge of Colonel Okey, whose range officers arc Adjutant M. MacDonncll and Lieutenant \Y. 11. Humphrey (Inglowood), and most expeditiously did they push matters forward. There was alisolutely no delay, and good progress was made, three matches being got through and one range of another during the day. The one man one target system was adopted for the first time here and gave general satisfaction, as did, also, the trigger pull lest. Lieutenant Crutch and yergt.-Major Armitagc were in charge of the marking at the trench, and though there were a few challenges, the majority of which were not sustained, the marking gave general satisfaction. Rifleman J. Hill was in charge of the secretarial duties, and though it was his maiden effort, everything went swimmingly, no detail he"ing left unattended to, whilst the prize-lists also made their appearance very promptly. Sergeant Southam again had charge of the catering—a most important feature—and earned high praise from the competitors. His capable assistants were Mesdames Carey (Patea), Oliver, Hill and Bruce. Prior to shooting commencing, Colonel Okey addressed the competitors, and briefly welcomed the visitors. He mentioned that no hair triggers would he allowed, and that rifles would be tested beforo each match. The time limit, he said, would be adhered to.

Strange to relate, the first three places in the Kaponga match fell to Kaponga. men, Rifleman Smith winning from Ri Heman Hollard with Go after a count bacli. The Jnglewood match went to nil Ingle•■vvml man, Rifleman T. King, with 67. Rifleman T. King- has not competed for two or three years, owing to his occupying the position of secretary, and his success is the more deserved. Four competitors lead in the Xew Plymouth match, and the fount hack gave'the verdict to Trooper A. Sangster (Stratford), Rifleman Loveday being second, Rifleman TV King, third, and Rifleman F. .T. O'XeM (Kaponga), fourth. The 800 yards range of the Vatca match was tired, and in this Lieutenant IJarlncl] obtained the possible. To-day the !)00 and 1000 yards ranges of the Stratford match, the Vatea match, ten shots at I(100 yards, and the teams' match, will be fired. The following is the result of yesterday's shooting:
