' LIFE UNBEARABLE. Christchiirch, January 81. A plague of lleas is ai present lnak'mj: life almost unbearable on a couple ol backblock runs in the North Canterbury district. Townspeople may smile at the idea, but the thing is a very gnue reality. The (leas are present in countless millions over the whole countryside, and swarm alike in riverbed, tussock and bush. Workers on the runs have been terribly tormented by the pla»U3, and one person who visited an hotel far back this week had been so'badly bitten that practically a pin could not touch his skin between the fii-abitcs, Old-timers in the district recall a similar visitalion about 2~> years ago, and paint their experiences in '. ery descriptive language.
