At the Stiirchtiekl inquest, Barry, a friend of the father, gave evidence tlnit both were abed at 2.30 on the afternoon of the murder. Mrs. Starcbfield, re-called, affirmed that she saw Barry in the street at 12.30, and told the landlady, who conlirnied the statement. When the father denied White's accusation, liarry also jumped up, crying: "It's a lie! It might have been his double!" The coroner, in summing up, said there was no evidence against anyone ( except the father. After the verdict Mrs. Starcbfield collapsed, sobbing piteously. Her husband was arrested, but did not display any emotion. He served in the South African" war, and had 20s weekly from the Carnegie Hero Fund.
