LABOR AND POLITICS.

. SWAMPING THE UPPER HOUSE. [, MR. WADE'S VIEWS. .Sydney, January 3d. Mr. Wade, discussing the proposal# of the Labor Conference to swamp the Legislative Council, said: "The conference does not seem to! realise that it is a dangerous, drastic and unprecedented .method, which is only to be resorted to in conditions of extreme urgency or public danger. It is scarcely disputed 'nowadays that swamping is in the abstract a reserve method for giving effect to the people's will, and only to be ap'plied as a last resort. SOCIALISTS AS LABOR CANDIDATES PROPOSAL REJECTED. Received 30, 7.30 p.m. Sydney, January 30. At the Labor Conference, Mr. Stuart Robertson moved that members of unions opposing selected Political and Labor League candidates as Socialists' candidates, may be eligible for selection as Labor candidates by signing the League pledges. Mr. llolman supported the proposition as cherishing a large amount of sympathy with the Socialists. The Labor movement, he said, was largely recruited from the ranks of iiie Socialists, and many good men would be lost to them if the seven years' disqualification always obtained. Some of the speakers opposed the proposal on the ground that Socialists had no right to preferential treatment. The resolution was lost. ' MR. HOLMAN FAREWELLED. Received 31, 12.25 a.m. Sydney, January 30. The Labor Conference resolved that an employer of non-unionists could not be a Parliamentary Labor candidate. The conference gave Mr. Holman a rousing farewell preparatory to his departure for New Zealand to-morrow.

EXPENSE OF ARMAMENTS. STRONG CONDEMNATION. Times—Sydney Sun Special Cables. Received 30, 5.30 p.m. London, January 30. The Labor Conference passed a resolution condemning the enormous, ruinous, and unnecessary growth of armaments. Mr. Churchill was described as the most reckless spendthrift of politicians.
