Archbishop O'Reilly, in an official statement on the Roman Catholic marriage law, said his church looked upon divorce from whatever cause as absolutely unlawful. Marriage to them was essentially sacred. The civil law nullified many laws of the church and claimed the right to nullify the contract of marriage. Power over the sacrament of marriage, the church held, was inalienably her own. ■** The ne tcmere decree was Inerely the assertion of the right which the Chur-.'h always claimed. A Roman Catholic must be married in the presence of a priest, otherwise it was no marriage before God. He condemned mixed marriages. If the man were a non-Cathol ; c the children must be brought up as j Catholics.
