TURF TOPICS. (l!y "Moturoa.") The majority of the Taranaki horses wh.cli raced at Trentham and ttt Foxton last week were brought homo yesterday. The Wellington trip could hardly be classed as a successful one, though l'atronale, lied Lupin and Play Off ali ran into a place in their engagements. They were, however, not I'orLuuate enough to "laud" a stake. lVrey Johnson won a double at Foxt,):i witii liatana, C. Miisscn scored with Princess Flo, and Maniaroa broke n long list of unfortunate performances by gathering in the Carnarvon Hack Welter for .Mr C. Shanvood.
Sir Moseley was brought up to II iwcra yesterday. Taranaki horses figure largely in the entries for the Wangauui meeting. Cheddar, Con the Shauglirauu, Manawakaha, White Crane and Minora and in the Cup, and Rcwi I'oto, Sunbird, Orattan, Ineuiu, Patronale, Cerberga, King Chira, and Avaunce in the Flying Handicap. Sandy Paul, Bcrcola, Timothy uiid Cornelian have been entered ior the chief hurdle races, and l'aoli, Toatere, Play Off, Avaunce, Gultce, Sylvania, White Crane, Wild Lupin, Conney, and Maniaroa are in the hack races. The races and trots will l>e held on consecutive days this year, and a four days' racing carnival should draw a fair crowd of Taranki sports to the river city. The Diver was backed as. a •' can't lose" order for the Hack Hurdles at Foxton on Friday, hut lie gave his backers a poor run for their money. Waipakn had 100 much pace for the opposition, and .it was oniy a question of getting over the obstacles. She nearly turned over at the last jump, but her rider made a clever recovery, and th.; race was all over!
Epworth, with three consecutive victories to his credit, was sent out first favorite for the Telephone Handicap. Beginning quickly, the favorite rushed to the front, and at the bend looked like winning all the way. At the distance Miss Kelly and Brunswick challenged, and a great race resulted. The judgo placed Miss. Kelly first by half n head from Brunswick, with Epworth a head away third. Many people reckoned Brunswick had just got there, but there is only one opinion that counts in these tight finishes. Imarose and Multiply divided favoritism in the President's Handicap, but both had to give way to the first day's winner, Lady Laddo, after an interesting race. Imarose ran well both days, and should break it for a win shortly.
Ladify, wlio*e name was, strangely enough, left oil' some of the cavils, was sent out a warm order for the Maiden Hack Race, and liad lier 15 opponents spread-eagled at the distance. Rangiwlietu and Orleans, who filled the minor places, are really useful liaeks. Orlea w iri a four-year-old gelding by Conqueror —Jeanne d'Are, owned and trained by W. Tatham at Awapuni. Te llouhou was first favorite in the Hack Welter, lint "the heads'' went solidly for Maniaroa, and their confidence was not misplaced as tho Maniapoto gelding had everything except Guidday Way settled a long way from homo, and, finishing gamely, wore his opponent down in the last bit and scored nicely.
Our King again proved his superiority by making 110 race of the Newmarket Handicap, winning from end to end. Simple Sam ran well for a couple oi furlongs, Iml never hit the front, and anyway never had a ghost or a chance with the Gisborne horse. Katana wad another double-winnc I ', coming witli a good run at the finish of the January Hack Handicap and easily beating NVailand. The crowd behind Silver Ruse reckoned they couldn't miss, but the mare ran much below her track form, and was never in the lighting line. Master Lupin carried most coin in tho iMoutoa Welter, and duly won, but his supporters had an anxious time when llnia gained a big break along the back and appeared to be winning easily as they turned for home. At the distance Gray brought the favorite up and Huia tried enough, Coromandel running Master Lupin to a length, with Miscal a close third. Coromandel is a most unfortunate horse, having run four seconds ami a third right on end. 11. Cray rode three winners at Foxton, others to score a win being W. Adams, I!. Young and M. McDonald, two each; I''. Myiiii, K. Mi-Donald, C. Mussen, 11. Tricklebank, Ferris, Conquest and D. McCarten, one each. Principal winning owners at the.
