Bowling Carnival
THE TAIIANAKI TOURNAMENT. OPENING DAY'S FLAY.
Howlers were favored with idaal weather for the opening (lay's play of the ninth annual Taranaki tournament, which commenced at the New Plymouth and Fitzroy greens yesterday. Of the 37 rinks that had nominated, there was only one defection, Armitage's (.Manaiii) rink having withdrawn. There is thus a bye in each of the four sections. Both the New Plymouth and Fitzroy greens are in fine order, and are playing keen. They were )>otb fully occupied all day.
Jlefore commencing play, ail the bowlers assembled on the New Plymouth grecfl, where they were briefly welcomed by Mr. W. J. Penn, the president of the centre, who expressed tlui hopo-that all would enjoy themselves during their stay in town, both on and off the green. ThoBC playing at Fitzroy then left by brakes for the suburban green, where they were formally welcomed by Mr. W. liealy, president of the Fitzroy Club. There we're some, very close finishes during the day, and some surprises, but all were accepted as part of the game with .that geniality and good fellowship that is so characteristic of bowlers.
During the afternoon there were a number of interested spectators, including members of the fair sex, at each of the greens, which wore quit* an animated appearance. Afternoon tea provided by the centre and dispensed b,f lady friends of the members proved a welcome adjunct to (lie afternoon's enjoyment. The. arrangements made by the committee and the indefatigable secretary, Mr. 0. X. l'irth, were perfect in every detail. Messrs. H. Dempgey and W. J. Chancy as green umpires at (he New Plymouth and Fitzroy greens respectively tabulated the l'esulta promptly.
Play commenced yesterday at 9.30 a.m., but to-day anil to-morrow it will begin at 9 a.ni. This evening visiting bowlers will be entertained at a smoke concert. The following arc the results: —
