This was his first visit to Taranaki, and he had been fortunate in being able to see quite a large area of the richest country in the w'hole of prosperous New Zealand. Stratford had some very valuable assets towards making this a very beautiful place. He mentioned the glorious mountain, the Patea and other streams, and what must be considered "the making of a beautiful park. He recommended that the Beautifying Society should take a hand in beautifying the. pretty little park on the banks of the river. Ho deprecated a patchwork policy, and urged that a comprehensive scheme should be planned, and ft portion of it put into effect each year. It would take time, but the prospect was worth working for. Continuing, he expressed his belief that Stratford was bound to grow into a large and important town in the future. He urged its citizens to aim high, to do their duty while they lived there, for the benefit of themselves and of posterity.
