CRUEL HOAX

ON lulu UNEMPLOYED. SWINDLKK'S SCHEME 01'' ROBRERY. Uerlin, December 18. A swindling manoeuvre, of an extraordinary character and on a large scale was carried out yesterday and to-dny on nearly 1000 unemployed men and women by a person calling himself Hurtling.

He called yesterday at various labor exchanges here, saying he require:! 11)00 textile workers for a new factory in Reichonbaeh, Silesia. After engaging as many as possible he visited a number of cooks and other servants to look' after the domestic comfort of his workpeople. Then he visited the Ministry of Tublie Works to arrange for special trains to carry the people to Keichenbaeh. lie was tol'd at the Ministry that he could not be supplied with trains; but, nothing daunted, he returned to the labor exchanges to make final preparations. The workpeople had assembled with their bundles of clothes and provisions. They had arranged to meet Uartiing at the railway station.

I In the meantime it got abroad that liailung was either mad or a dangerous swindler, but this did not prevent a large 'body of working men and women from appearing 10-day on the platform of the station whore they were finally disillusioned. Rartung did not appear at the station, a- he had evidently got wind that he was suspected. The impression is that if he really was a swindler bis idea was to collect the price of the workers' tickets to Reiehenbaeh and to disappear with the booty. The police have begun a hunt for Uartiing, but so far he has evaded them.
