At a meeting of the City Council last nig.it, .the result of the competition for the proposed.new Town Hall at the rear of the present municipal buildings was made known. There were 32 entries, and the assessor, Mr. S. Hurst Seager, placed, 11. Mandcro (Dnnedin) first, and then 11. T. Hodges (Sydney), McDonald and Fleming (Dunedin) and 11. M. Helm '(Wanganui). Each design is entitled to JC7S and the winning design to another £IOO, which, however, is merged in -commission in the event of the btiild•ing being proceeded wit-Iy within 12 months. On charges of acting as a bookmaker, and as such making bets on the Alexandra Park racecourse on December 27 last, Gilbert Parker was to-day fined 120 and costs. Professor Evershed, of the Kodaikanal Observatory, India, who is selecting the site for the Cawthron Observatory, is making good progress. Practically every day lias been beautifully line and the atmosphere wonderfully clear. Jt is understood thai lie is most I favorably impressed with the conditions here, and it is not altogether unlikelv that Professor Evershed will have a very interesting pronouncement to make at the conclusion'of his investigations. | PROVINCIAL ANNIVERSARIES. Wellington, Yesterday. For the Anniversary Dav celebrations the weather is dull, and half a gale is blowing. The races are largely attended, and other chief attraction's are the early settlers' carnival, yachting, and sports, Wanganui, Ye»tcrdav. ■ Anniversary Day is being celebrated by a general holiday. The chief attraction is the Caledonian .Society's annual gathering in Cook's Gardens. There was a fair attendance, a' large number pipers and dancers being present.
