ROAD FORMATION.
I IXTKRKSTIXG KXPKUI.MKXTS. ! .Some little time ago the liawhitiroa was tar-sprayed with ordinary gasworks tar. Imt it has not proved very success- , fill, and is showing signs of breaking up (says the (lawera Star). A small section on the hill near the lfawliiliroa school treated with restar appears to he holding well, and is in marked contrast to the rest of the road. The settlers desire that the whole road should now lie treated with this preparation, and consider the small extra cost would lie well justified. The riltliam-Kaponga road for the most part is in very good order, and with reasonable top-dressings of some good tar preparation will apparently maintain a good surface. A small ■ piece near the toll-gate did not stand so well, and soltar was tried in the wheel tracks. Wherever this secured a good foundation it is standing well. The Maiiaia road has had another top-dress-ing of tar, and is in -plendid condition. Work is now proceeding rapidly on the Kltlnim road between the Rowan road and Rivorlea. The sweeping of the road reveals a splendid foundation of metal, and restar is being sprayed over this and sanded over, with coarse grit. 11 should afford every opportunity for a thorough tost of this tar preparation, and if successful a first-class road should result. The restar preparation, where tried by the Eltham County Council on Hie Kltliam-Stratford road, is maintaining a solid surface after three months' traffic.
