THE NEW HEBRIDES.
I'RESByXKKIAN MISSION Ail IKS. 'A SCATIIIXC COXDEIINWriO-V. By Cable—Press Ast oei;i'Jon - Copyright Keecivcd 10, 10.40 p.m. Sydney, January 1!). Tlie Presbyterian niissinnarits in tli'.i Now Hebrides are hotly attacked by M. K. Laussel in "La France, Australie, Noumea." The article says that to ruin French colonisation by every possible moans, and remain tin- sole masters of the Archipelago, is the aim of the heads of the Presbyterian movement*, the Revs, liillan and Patou. Tiicir efforts having failed miserably in the Islands before the firmness of the colonists and the growing contempt of the natives, they now try to make their cause a national cr.o. Those people are assisting at the odd and unexpected spectacle of a nation in the profess of formation which does not succeed in colonising its own teiritory, and crying noisily for the annexation of a few islands without taking the opinion or" the colonists installed there. Replying to Mr Glynn's eulogy of Presbyterian missionaries, Jl. Laussel says that the Presbyterians' religion is only a means for gaining the confidence,, respect, and, above all the nntiYcs' money. For t!0 years they regularly brought the Nc>v Hebrides into contempt. All their justice, all their morality, and their excesses have been borne with indignant protest-. The colonists have been reduced to slavery. Dispossessed of a.l! his property, the unhappy Kanaka is oblige.! to work for a master be detests and fears, but whom he has fatally paid and comfortably housed. Visited by the Burns, Philip vessel-;, the Presbyterians should be able to do useful work in the southern group, where they are sole masters, but one finds only misery and ruin, and the mortality among the Kanakas is frightful. On the other hand the Catholic missionaries have gain' the esteei.i and all'ection of both co'onists and natives.
