At (lie <J)oininions Commission, Mr. Harris, chief clerk in the Colonial Office, testified to the success of the scheme, whereby the scientific department of the Imperial Institute examined the economic and food plants, and other products of the dominions. The payment for this work was by fees, for twelve months. The trial yielded £2OO in fees, so the Institute decided to continue, the. work permanently. He regretted that Australians and New Zealanders failed to use the seicntilic department more freely. Canada utilised it to investigate a new variety of wvlieat. P.KST ROITK TO AUSTRALIA. At the Dominion*' Commission, Professor Biles said there were difficulties in deepening the Suez Canal, therefore the Cape was Hie best route to Australia for the large, deep-draughted vessels of the future.
